I finally got to watched David Janssen's SMILE JENNY, YOU'RE DEAD (1974) movie it is the second pilot of the TV series HARRY O, I have never had the pleasure of seeing any episodes of the series nor the two pilot movies the first SUCH DUST AS DREAMS ARE MADE ON (1973) is still MIA on DVD and wow what a great character played by David Janssen. Janssen is Harry O (short for Orwell) a completely unconventional P.I. he rides the bus in LA because it gives him time to think, a former cop who had to retire from the force when a bullet got lodged in his back near the spinal cord which is literally a pain in the back as he struggles with a stiff back.
In SMILE JENNY, YOU'RE DEAD Harry is hired by a police officer friend to investigate the murder of his daughter Jenny's estranged husband what Harry doesn't know is that Jenny played by Andrea Marcovicci (why didn't she become a star is beyond me) is being stalked by a nut wonderfully played by Zalman King that turns to murder get the men out of Jenny's life. Harry O struggles not just with trying to solve the case but also with his moral issues of falling for the lovely Jenny. The great cast also includes a young and precocious Jodie Foster, a super sexy neighbor Barbara Leigh (the best Vampira model ever!), Clu Galagar as a police detective that doesn't care for Harry's involvement. Janssen narration through out the movie really sets the mood and moves the movie along fairly well. If the series is anything like this pilot I can't wait to get a chance to see it, here's hoping Warner plans to release the HARRY O on DVD soon. There was 44 episodes but it seems that IMDB list the first pilot movie as episode one bring the total to 45, I assume that the original pilot was later re-packaged as episode one perhaps during reruns.
