Jan 20 13 12:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It seems unlikely to me that the photo of Lee all browned and crusty would be just a "publicity shot" of some sort of unused test. From all the other make-up test photographs in the Hammer archives, the photos would be shot in pre-production on a neutral background, because the film would not have been in production yet, hence, no sets. But the classic Rotted-Drac' shot, part of the original Universal-International publicity packet of stills, is clearly on the floor of the library set, lit exactly the way the scene is in the film, with Lee in his movie costume. Given that the whole thing was shot in a day or two before Christmas and everyone wanted to wrap and go home, I can't see the entire crew waiting around the set for two hours watching Leakey and Ashton puttering around with an unnecessary test. If there is-- as seems to be indicated by Simon-- some earlier, subtler make-up (or a later, more rotted one), then we were robbed not only of one, but two progressive scarred faces in the series (which actually makes logical cinematic sense.) Jan 20 13 1:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	And honestly, I don't think this make-up looks exactly like the one in the still, either: less hair, and grayer, for one thing. This photo of the projected film appeared in a Japanese fan magazine about 40 years ago and was reprinted by Hajimi Ishida in his 2005 book on Hammer. It was from that I guessed the archive might have a copy, and I contacted Hajime as point man to deal with them. Jan 20 13 7:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ted Newsom and co. are absolutely right, that image is not a screenshot and had been know to be from a missing frame. Also there would be no logical reason to go through the effort of applying that make-up to Chris Lee's face for one publicity photo. Applying make-up isn't easy and takes a lot longer than many seem to think (in fact, some make-up jobs have taken around 6 hours to apply).

The b/w pic angle matches the onscreen angles which the color pic does not. Also, I don't think there are necessarily two different make-ups going on there. Different angle, obscured by a hand, reprinted in poorer resolution in black and white... Taking those things into consideration, they could be the same make-up job. I expect seeing the moment in action will make that clearer.

I expect seeing the moment in action will make that clearer. I totally agree with you about the photo - in film, on-set photos are often taken during filming or just after. And, yes, it is unlikely that the two pictures show two separate make-up jobs and it is more likely to be as you say.
