Feb 13 12 11:21 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ok this is somewhat YUKUs fault for not automatically re-sizing images, but we have to live our limitations. However can we please start trying to make an effort to not render pages impossible to read by posting giant images that stretch every text box on the screen off the edge of the screen. I really don't want to have to block images on this site and go through the trouble of allowing exceptions and clicking on individual images to load them. As more people get laptops and more people look at this forum forum on tablets and phones this will become a larger and larger issue.

It seems that there are more threads every day that I'm now avoiding because I don't want to scroll back-and-forth to read the text because there now seems to be a race to see who can post the biggest image. This thread is an example of someone posting an image that is totally useless since one will never glimpse all of it without zooming back until any text is unreadable: http://monsterkidclassich...ing-Posters#.T_N0MMXDuSo This morning I posted an image from a link that proved to be too large, so I went back and downloaded it to my drive. Then I used "FS Viewer" to resize it, and edited the post. Not to toot my own horn, but it's my way of being "user friendly" by being considerate of my fellow users. So, in the interest of future endeavors on my part, can someone inform me as to what the specs are for an image in terms of not extending the screen?

Jul 3 12 5:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't even know HOW to post an oversized image. It certainly happened to me in the past, but I never knew why. These days, whatever I post either shows up as actual size or a maximum of what looks like about 4"x"6", maybe 5"x 7". I would actually like to be able to post a still at the appropriate 8" x 10" but have no idea how to go about it. Far as I can tell I have zero control over the size of photos or the length of a typed line. Either my computer or Yuku makes all those decisions for me.

Jul 3 12 6:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Rick, when you post a photo, do you upload it from a saved pic on your drive, or do you just use the link of a pic that you found on the internet? If it's the latter, it's just that you may not have run into an oversized image recently. Maybe later I'll fool around a bit, starting with an oversized image and then progressively step it down until I find the right size. But it would be easier if the boss would just step in and advise us.

Jul 3 12 6:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I grab a picture from the 'net, or scan a photo in, and download to iPhoto. Then I upload to my "Images" on the Board and from there into appropriate threads. I've really noticed it with the several 8x10s that I've posted which always show up much smaller than the original (and smaller than I'd like.) And it doesn't seem to matter whether it's something from online or a scan of my own. They get downsized.

Jul 3 12 6:46 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I see. I don't have a scanner, so I've never tried that method. Up until today, none of my posted images posed a problem, but the one this morning was listed as being 1758 X 2406 and posted from the link, was way too big. So, I used FS Viewer to adjust it, which resulted in making it 417 X 570 and this was the result: This was using 25% of the original dimensions, as 50% was too large. The conversion may not work out exactly if one does the math based on the original size, but it was suitable for my purpose.

As you posted it, it had dimensions of 570 X 437 and fills the box as seen here in the thread: http://monsterkidclassich...rankenstein#.T_OKUMXDuSo I added 33% to the image, to yield 760 X 583, so let's see if it extends past the normal frame: Nope, it appears the same as it did when you posted it. Thus, we can presume that the system resizes, but there must be a threshold to its ability to do so. I'll add another 33% and post it below.

Here's a pair of screencaps which are 702 pixels in width, which is about as far as you can push it without stretching the page (at least this is the case on my monitor, which is why I always resize to this width):

Jul 3 12 7:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Here it is at 1010 X 775: No change, I'm beginning to think that photos uploaded from one's hard drive are automatically resized. To see if that's true, I'll save the SPIDERMAN poster on my drive, and upload it from there rather than just pasting the link. OK - we may now be confident that resizing automatically occurs when an image is uploaded into a folder. Here's that poster when I just use its web address: EDITED TO ADD: you'll have to take my word for it that the same image posted directly from the web by using the "add from url" button took the page out of normal formatting range. Well, you can serve as my witness since I'll edit the post. The oversized Spiderman was the result of a image linked directly from the internet, using "add from URL" in the pic posting box. I saved that same image on my hard drive, made no changes as to its dimensions, but the system made the adjustments when I uploaded it from my drive to my image folder. Thus, all of those gigantic images that we see are coming from linked photos and not from uploaded photos. Maybe management might want to disable the function that enables pics to be posted directly from the web. I will now delete the oversized pic having made my point. It is not my wish to cause others distress by having to scroll sideways to read text.

I get nasty when I have to scroll to read text. I'm dyslexic, I already have enough trouble reading off the computer. Diminishing eyesight doesn't help either.

Yuku's own image hosting has completely flaked out twice in the past, and only offers limited storage anyway... unless one pays to upgrade. Putting all one's eggs in that unstable basket seems like setting up the possibility of suddenly losing all images simultaneously at the CHFB in the future. Spreading the load across a variety of image hosts remains a better option. It may be possible to set a 'maximum image size' within the site preferences (a few other Yuku sites seem to hint at having done this). Only mods can tell us that for sure. Although it's worth keeping a sense of perspective also; there are actually very few 'stretched out' threads here and the vast majority of users DO post 'within sensible limits' (I think the 'stretched threads' just SEEM to be more plentiful than they really are, due to their ability to annoy! Please.

You're right, I should have thought that out a bit more. Yes, most posters are responsible, but it appears that within the last year I've seen more Amazing, Colossal Threads. It's frequently surfaced when I've searched for some info, I end up with a page of a thread which has the relevant info, but the darn thing is so hard to read because another post on the page has an oversized image. And don't get me started on the people who have to respond to the post with the image, quoting it and repeating sometimes multiple images, just to say "nice pics." That can force another page within the thread, and that page is now extending past the borders. For ages I could not get the pic thing to work, then someone posted that we had to go through some extra verification step and I did so and only then did Ted Newsom's very nicely detailed PM to me on the process actually work. I'm hardly a novice at such things, I've posted many a pic on many a website, but just had trouble here. So perhaps newer users could use some guidelines and my purpose in responding to Rider's five-month-old OP was to generate some responses and hopefully some expertise or especially mod input. I've never used Photobucket or Imageshack, so I wasn't quite sure about the process. Again, I should have double-checked before making a blanket statement, but I thought they were just on-line storage areas and function as an alternate to storing photos on one's hard drive and that one "uploaded" from there. Here are the steps as Ted Newsom was so kind to send me a couple of years ago when I mentioned that i could not get the pic posting to function. I had tried all of it previously, but there was an extra step required in terms of account verification that I had yet to take. I saved Ted's PM just in case someone else ever needed it: Hi. You probably have a number of programs preinstalled on your computer that you don;t use-- most likely MS Paint, possibly even a Photoshop-type thing, all of which can be toyed with to crop, flip left to right, make larger and smaller, etc. But grabbing photos and re-posting them is a breeze, and doesn't even need any of that stuff. When you find a picture you want, point at it with the cursor and right-click, once. You'll get a menu with a bunch of option. Choose "Save picture." This will save that picture file in your computer in the place you select. Then when you want to post it in a CHFB post or anywhere else, hit REPLY (not QUICK REPLY). You'll get a series of icons atop the reply text box. Near the end is a little square box which looks like a panoramic shot of a mountain and a sun-- the icon for pictures. Click that, and you'll open your yuku picture file (betcha didn't even know you had one, huh?) Hit UPLOAD, then BROWSE. This will let you look into the files of your own computer. Find where you saved the picture file, select it, and hit UPLOAD. The yuku program will then suck it up and copy it into your personal files on that server. Then park your cursor in the text box, and click on the "Picture" icon again. That will re-open your file and you'll see all the pictures you've uploaded (which will be one, so far). Click the picture and PRESTO, it pops into the text box.

Doesn't that mean there are only 3 places an image may come from?: From a third party image hosting service (I use my Image Shack account) From a member's own image files on their Yuku account (like the Newsome explanation above) From direct link (url) to where ever else an image is hosted, like on the web (like Doctor Macro). Please note in which of these cases any re-sizing is automatic. Also, some problems can be avoided by hitting return or enter between adding multiple images.

(The same link that shows up near the Quick Reply box.) Remove the spaces for it to work in your post. I'm just using spaces so you can read it. Normal bbcode:[ IMG ] url [ / IMG ] Scaled bbcode: [ IMG = 300x235 ] url [ / IMG ] [ TECHNICAL -- Feel free to skip this paragraph ] All it does is include width="300" height="235" in the HTML IMG element of the web page we're all seeing. It leaves it up to your web browser to resize the image. You still download whatever normal image the hosting server sends. Any scaling done by the image hosting server comes before this, so an image might be scaled (and messed up) several times before you see it here. For example, in Firefox, you can right click the images below and select "View Image Info" to see the original (huge) size of the image your web browser received, and also what Firefox scaled it to (which is shown in parenthesis). [ / TECHNICAL ] Here's a couple of examples of that huge image scaled down to size, The reason people do the scaling themselves is they can produce a better final image than your web broswer. I'm also guilty of posting huge images, though not here. Some of my microscope pictures are difficult enough to interpret without adding more artifacts from resizing. But that thread (on another board) has "WARNING huge pictures" in the topic, and it's my own showcase thread. Jul 4 12 8:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The easy way to do it is if you post something that stretchs the page post it as a link instead of as an inline image. Also keep in mind that things will look fine on a wide screen and totally screw up other screens. I have no issues on my new laptop. but on my desktop where I need to increase font size to read text, and on my old laptop there are several threads that are unreadable. There are also some images that are so huge they can't be viewed on any screen.
