Feb 12 12 7:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Starting at RockShockPop.com then Facebook today, I saw that Fred Adelman passed away from leukemia. Sounds like it was last month but only coming to light now due to a friend he'd asked to manage his stuff. He was a longtime member of AV Maniacs (formerly DVD Maniacs) and more importantly had his own site/zine Critical Condition ( http://critcononline.com/ ). He had a vast collection of admats, vhs and other assorted goodies as well as a great amount of knowledge about cult movies. Fred was known for ruffling a lot of feathers along the way, but was also considered a great friend to have. I did not know him personally, but I can't help but feel like I did from the years of reading his informative and hilarious posts. I bought an electronic version of his collection of admat, VHS cover and poster scans, and it's mind-blowing the amount of stuff he clipped and saved for decades. And his website is great, especially the cover galleries for all for all of the oddball VHS labels from the 1980s.

Most of his Facebook posts were him aggressively calling someone out over something or other (when not hawking his wares). He was blunt to the point of rudeness, frequently. That said, he was a memorable character and a guy who lived his life for the fan community and the obscure video hobby. Sorry to hear of his passing. To keep his memory alive, please give blood, and if you are under fifty and in good health, please consider joining the bone marrow registry.

How can you be reported dead online in all your usual haunts, eulogized, etc. and the error doesn't get corrected for six months? This I've got to hear. Jul 6 12 11:34 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I started being more active here because a board (non-genre) I was very active on for about six years started verifying ID via Facebook, and they concluded my Facebook account was not for a real person and blocked my posts in such a way I could not see that they had. You be not-relieved to know they changed their mind a week ago after 3 months of claiming there was no way to unblock me. It was like being a 1984 un-person.

Sadly, I was the one forced to out Fred and his ridiculous "he died, now send me money" games. It is really strange as he and I got along great (unlike Fred with most folks online). His emails to me over the last few days were, uh, not as pleasant. Can one be grumpy after being revived from the dead? :-) This was my first experience in fandom freaks and I must say it was a doozy.

It gets closed quickly, but there are some...interesting moments from time to time, for sure. No disrespect towards anyone intended, but from a distance I can't help but have a laugh at this, and be reminded of how nutty fandom can be. And why I tend to stick to certain parts of the Universe out there on the net.
