This topic was started in a Calagari thread where someone
claimed that it was the frist horror film.
So much good information came in I thought we should start a new thread on the subject and maybe qualify it a bit.
Here are the 3 catagories:
1. What is the first horror film?
This would be a short one or two reeler. It would seem Melies’ LE MANOIR DU DIABLE (1896) would take the honors, but Rick and I both agree that this is very difficult to validate since we need to clarify what would constitute a horror film. There is a film on YouTube that someone posted somewhere calling it the first horror film. It had ghosts popping in and out which would make it a true horror film, but I can't remember what the title was. It had a date of 1900 or so. I have it downloaded and will look it up.
2. What is the first horror feature (at least 4 or 5 reels). Here is where all the great discussion came in. If it would be possible to duplicate the relevant entries from the Calagari thread it would make matters easier.
So far good arguments were made for CABINET OF CALIGARI, NOSFERATU (No one can disagree it is a true horror film) and especially LIFE WITHOUT SOUL, the early Frankenstein based film.
PhantomXCI mentions L’INFERNO (1912) and I also thought of
that one. I haven't seen it, but it is out on DVD.
However, is it really a horror film or a film that just contains some horror content? I really need to see that one.
3. What is the earliest EXTANT horror film short and feature? Since no one alive has seen LIFE WITHOUT SOUL, can we be sure it is, in fact, a horror film?
