Having just read Susan Hill's novel (the film of which, as most of us know, is upcoming from neo-Hammer), I am a bit puzzled about the apparent enthusiasm surrounding it. I thought it a pretty ordinary Gothic pastiche, not notably rich in either prose, atmosphere, or surprise, although the ghost motif does have that poignant underlying theme of loss. I wonder if it's a tail-wagging-the-dog sort of situation: that other media, i.e., radio, theatre, ITV version by the legendary Nigel Kneale, have found it a congenial vehicle for adaptation & so enhanced its reputation in reverse.
