This was MY LETTER. I wrote my letter and this was the response I received from  Lon Chaney Jr. back in the 1970's with regard to a book he was planning to write, titled, A CENTURY OF CHANEY'S. Along with the letter which I wrote to Chaney, I also included posters and stills which Chaney was going to reproduce as illustrations for the book. For doing this favor for him, Lon promised to sign all of the posters and photos for me. Unfortunately he was slow to return the posters and 10+ photos until I reminded him of the fact that he still had them. He promptly returned the posters (unsigned) along with one current 8X10 portrait still which he did sign, "Hi Gary". Shortly thereafter, Lon Chaney Jr. died. Years later I asked RON CHANEY about the photos. He recalled my correspondence with Chaney, but claimed that he never found the photos I sent. Apparently Ron had gone through Chaney's files after his death. Thankfully Lon Chaney Jr. did agree to conduct a interview with me, via mail, which inevitably was published twice. I still own the typed interview with his signature attached. However it has always haunted me that Chaney's files still contained the 10+ 8 X 10 photos I sent him from THE WOLF MAN, GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, THE MUMMY'S CURSE, SON OF DRACULA etc. signed to me. Only recently I was advised that there is a photo on Ebay from THE WOLF MAN or ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, signed, "Hi Gary". This was one of the photos I sent to Chaney back in the 1970's. I would love to know which auction offered this photo and/or the signed letter that you have reproduced here. Someone has snatched property that once belonged to me, and I would love to have it back. I did contact the auction house offering the signed photo, but all they said was that it was a interesting story..but that they had no information relating to the photo's source. If nothing else, I am very pleased to SEE the letter once again that Lon Chaney Jr. sent to me, thanks to your reproducing it here.

Thank you for the information. I have no idea who the guy is that owned the letter, nor have I ever heard of the auction house that sold it to you. I do thank you for watching out for any photos that might show up with "Hi Gary" inscribed on them from Lon Chaney Jr. If you go to Ebay and search for signed Lon Chaney Jr. photos, you might still get a chance to see THE WOLF MAN photo that I once owned....inscribed "Hi Gary". The seller is asking $2,000 which he will never get.
