(Hey, I tried to post this with the main "10th Annual..." thread, but couldn't get the board to apear, for some reason...)
Now, I'd love to be able to nominate "King Kong, and the City," over at www.thethunderchild.com, which kind of wound becoming what someone called a KING KONG trilogy...
;-)
But don't know if it would just be a sign of really extreme knuckleheadedness, to nominate one's own article. (Maybe tomorrow, with some background on how it came to be...)
Now, last year, somehow, before I was posting here, I got an email asking for some Hall of Fame suggestions.
Here's what I wrote back!
Best, Jim
I see that Calvin Beck is very rightly in the Hall!
But since most of those great CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN issues were actually edited by Bhob Stewart--who has made many other great contributions to chronicling pop culture history, and making a bit, himself--
How about Bhob?
Michael Stein has been publishing/editing FILMFAX since the beginning, which seems like a million years now. But few folks realize that Michael was also one of the partners behind FANTASTIC FILMS magazine, meaning he's been doing this for nearly THIRTY-FIVE years.
That's certainly a hefty contribution, to the field!
Is it time to honor one of THE MONSTER TIMES guys: Publishers Larry Brill and Les Waldtsein; early editor Joe Kane (who has also produced VIDEOSCOPE magazine for ages, now), early scribe Steve Vertleib...?
Bob Martin, original editor of FANGORIA, is living in Las Vegas... He might be tickled by the honor....
Chris Steinbrunner was a key behind-the-scenes figure in the fantasy scene, almost like a male Auntie Mame of horror, science fiction and mystery, introducing--NETWORKING--a LEGION of enthusiasts to one another, through the decades. Right out of college, Chris went to work at WOR, where he wound up contributing to Zacherley's classic TV series.
(Chris, while still in high school, actually wrote a script for THE SHADOW radio series.) Ultimately, as WOR's film programmer, Chris introduced the entire New York tri-state area to a treasure trove of classic movies, making late nights on Channel 9 range from seeming like a grind house double feature, to the finest art house offerings. It was also probably Chris who cooked up the "KING KONG on Thanksgiving" annual broadcasts.)
But wait, there's more!
;-)
Steinbrunner wrote ONE OF THE VERY FIRST HISTORIES of the genre, CINEMA OF THE FANTASTIC, back in the early '70s--back when such books were hard to get published.
He won an Edgar award, a few years later, for co-editing the great, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MYSTERY AND DETECTION...
(Chris was also a regional vice-president of the Mystery Writers of America.)
He was also the silent partner in Centaur Press, which re-presented fantasy classics, including DR. CYCLOPS, and THE WEREWOLF'S DAUGHTER...
On purely the "fandom side," Steinbrunner created and ran the film shows at MANY fantasy and comic book conventions, through the era's golden age.
Chris' contributions were IMMENSE. (He was also a contributor to some of the early mionster magazines, come to think of it.) And since his
untimely passing in 1993, his efforts, and accomplishments, seem to have been too easily forgotten.
Chris Steinbrunner might well be the best choice.
Best, Jim
