Jan 25 12 11:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This is a film I have always wanted to like. It had a lot going for it. Weird zombies, nice scenery, George Eastman, and of course, Laura Gemser. But the movie is soooo bogged down and long, I just couldn't enjoy it. Well, I sat down and worked out my own edit of the film. Bascially, if you follow these steps, I found it to be a rather enjoyable movie. I have not seen the cut version, but I assume several of the things I pass up on are in that version as well. 1. Begin at Chapter 2 and fast forward to the 5:45 mark. 2. At the 9 minute mark, jump ahead to chapter 8 3. At 34:18 jump to Chapter 8 4. At 43:25 fast forward to 50:32 5. At 125:00 jump to Chapter 15 Hellbilly Hollywood - write-ups, reviews, and random info on horror, sleaze, and grindhouse. From movies to video games to comics to trailers to music, HH covers it all.

I once came to the disappointing conclusion that, although I also require a certain artistic integrity, all of my favourite bands or movies or whatever involve people I find sexually appealing somewhere. On the flip side, and maybe this is a girl thing, I don't find artists or actors sexually appealing until I've decided I like their work. Sometimes, when all else fails, you can just watch bits of the movie.

I keep meaning to buy the "cut" version to see if it's any better because the zombie stuff is pretty good. Plus, the fact that one of the actors has warts on his junk really isn't good.

I always think it's funny in some of these Euro-trash they have above average to beautiful women being "pleasured" by butt-ugly or downright offensive-looking guys. I don't care if the target audience for these things is 99.9% dumpy-looking straight men, why not have both "actors" at least be agreeable in the looks department? Who thought this guy's STD would be palatable? I remember maybe one or two scenes of zombies shuffling through palm-trees having a faint whiff of atmosphere, and the rest just being torture.

I've seen quite a few of D'Amato's porn movies and the majority of them are rather disgusting to watch. I can't say I'm a porn fan but I do watch the stuff from Rollin, Franco and D'Amato just to watch all of their credits.

Feb 18 12 6:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I thought that the film would have been improved by inserting some of the scenes shot by Rollin. They are included as extras on the 79 min. Euroshock release I have. There are some very well shot scenes that would have made great dream sequences in the film. Luckily, mine deosn't include the warty members.

Anthropophagus is the only film of his I've seen that I think has a couple of real scares, and aren't just trying to shock.

It's kinda grody and low-rent, but it manages, almost in spite of itself, to be darn creepy. Easily, far and away, head and shoulders, no question the best D'Amato I've ever seen.

I'm not sure if it was under the title BURIED ALIVE. If your thinking about the zombie film...that's not the one. BEYOND THE DARKNESS (BUIO OMEGA) is about a taxidermist who stuffs his lover. It's very graphic and not for the squeamish..

I'm not saying it's a great movie, or even a good one, but for a Joe D'Amato? For a movie of this style and ooky content? It had genuine creep factors working for it, and kept me interested (if slightly disgusted). It's not going on any best lists, but it was just so much more than I expected (which was nothing at all, honestly.)

It's just so ugly, surreal and disturbing that it's hard not to admire it even if it's hard to watch. I've seen around 60 D'Amato movies and from the link below you can see that most of them got * or * 1/2 stars. With that said, I did go on and pick up the alternate version of EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD. Not a fan of BEYOND THE DARKNESS? It wallowed a little bit too much in it's own sadism for me I guess. The scene where the lead pulls out a woman's finger-nails with a pliers comes to mind. I sometimes have a hard time with films that have that much fun brutalizing women. DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE and BLOOD-SUCKING FREAKS also go too far for my taste.

Regarding BEYOND THE DARKNESS I just don't get the big deal the film is too slow, sadistic and a complete downer for my tastes and I actually enjoy several of the bloody Italian Zombie and Cannibal films.
