Does it have some of that early talkie thing going on? Sure does, but that doesn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying all of that. I happen to love early talkies anyway, so none of that turns me off. While I agree the first 20 min are absolute brilliance, the film doesn't really lose me at all throughout the latter portion of the film, keeps me gripped throughout. And I've seen it dozens of times now.

We can argue the actor's merits all day long, but not that he's not an internationally recognized figure. "Of course. I also have pals from everywhere who KNOW who is Bela Lugosi - but I was just speaking of general audiences, not fans of fantasy/horror movies. For these audiences outside USA, Lugosi is just an unknown, in no way an "icon". He is not alone - ask to young people in London who was Boris Karloff, the common answer is "Boris who?". It's not a phantasm of my part, I really made the experience in London's streets some years ago, following a bet with some friends, and almost always with the same result. All of my friends in this country are fantasy/horror film fans (generally, we worked for the same magazines) so, of course, they know who is Bela Lugosi, but none of them is particularly fond of him - all of them do prefer Karloff, or Peter Cushing.I never wrote that Lugosi was a mediocre actor, I wrote that it was a quite common opinion among French critics. If you want MY opinion, he is passable in DRACULA, excellent in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN and WHITE ZOMBIE and some others. Karloff was much more versatile and talented - just watch him in THE BLACK ROOM for instance, his prestation is worthy of an Oscar. I don't think he was overplaying in THE LOST PATROL. If you have ever met religious fanatics, they are exactly like Boris in the movie, and even worse. Lugosi was just good, not "exceptional" in NINOTCHKA - Karloff was infinitely more remarkable as the anti-semitic baron in HOUSE OF ROTHSCHILD, for instance. Or in THE CRIMINAL CODE. Or in SCARFACE. Etc. And incidentally, his performance in THE WALKING DEAD is totally different of his one(s) as the Frankenstein Monster, in spite of some similarities in the characters.
