The article talks about how animator Gene Deitch was hoping to launch a feature-length animated version of the Tolkien tale, and put together this 11 minute reel. Still, any obscure animation information coming to light always intrigues me. (I can't believe I'd never heard of this before.) I probably enjoyed the story-behind-the story more than the actual footage, but I'm glad to see it. Ray Harryhausen had considered THE HOBBIT as a possible project for he and Charles Schneer (I think he said this was in the early Sixties); I've always been curious what approach they might have taken with the material.
