OK, I know there's been quite a lot of discussion on how much grain should be present on a HD disc.
But I think everyones opinion should be gathered someplace...why not here?
I watched the ISLAND OF LOST SOULS BD last night and was once again disapointed with Criterion's restorations.
I understand that the movie was filmed with some sort of soft diffusing lense which creates ghosting (with the blown-out whites.)
But why all the grain?
Just check out the STILLS gallery to see how clear the BD might have looked (you can see pores etc.)
I know there's people out there that say "but film is made up of grain"...
IMO unless you sit in the front row of a theater...you don't notice the grain as much.
Unfortunately viewers at home, with a HD tv, can't sit farther away from our smallish tvs.
Another complaint is that if the grain is cleaned up the picture looks "waxy" (a few at AVManiacs say so anyways)
Do the stills on IOLS look waxy? (if they do...I guess I prefer waxy)
I think the BD of Psycho looks just right...is it too waxy for some?
I noticed Criterion seems to have adopted this more grain the better moto because all the Criterion BDs I have so far look too grainy for me. (like. THE MAGICIAN)
I hope this thread will have a little life...pro or against grain.
I think it's important for us BD collectors.
