Just now beginning a new edition of the original Forgotten Horrors manuscript for an expanded and tweaked edition -- long trail ahead, but worth the effort, given the wealth of information and insights that have come to light since the last expansion in 1999.
One starting place is a reappraisal of John Wayne's Gothic Westerns of the 1930s, pivotal titles in the Forgotten Horrors canon in view of their Germanic grimness, their grotesque characters and ferocious motivations, and their role in the invention of stunt-effects work that would become important to the film industry at large.
We'll be trotting out three of the more inventive such titles on Jan. 15, Jan. 22, and Jan. 29 in a film festival at the Fort Worth Museum of Science & History: 2 p.m. on each date for John Wayne: Lone Star Westerns. Details follow at the Forgotten Horrors blog (link below), and in my weekly newspaper column (link likewise below).
If you should happen to find yourself in Fort Worth on these dates, please consider yourself and/or -selves welcome for a rare opportunity to catch these Forgotten Horrors-on-Horseback in a series of big-screen showings. The showings will allow time for Q&A sessions, as well.
