A beautiful job of restoration, and a exceptional package with its pocket history of Kong in an image packed booklet. Coincidentally I had returned to the Rhino disc about a week ago after sampling Tilson Thomas's rendering of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in D minor, a work which in its early sections could be (IMHO) a progenitor of Steiner's "King Kong" and "The Most Dangerous Game" scores. I was driving over the GW Bridge from New Jersey to New York City today, blasting this KONG CD on my i-Pod. As the plane battle music was blazing away in my car, I looked over to my right and stared out at the Empire State Building rising high over the skyline in the distance. Feb 15 12 12:18 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Faiola-produced Kong soundtrack is outstanding, as is the booklet inside, with stuff I don't think I've seen before. I also have a John Lasher-produced CD with 21 cuts which is okay, but the Faiola version is really the standard to beat.

Feb 15 12 8:52 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, the Lasher CD is Fred Steiner's 1976 re-recording. John Morgan was one of the orchestrators on that project. A few years ago Morgan and Bill Stromberg re-recorded the entire score, including a dropped cue with Iggy the Monkey. I would say that THAT album is the standard to beat. But isn't it great - we can enjoy Max's landmark music either in original 1933 sonics or in glorious digital sound. Life is very, very sweet! Jul 12 12 10:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have no idea if the OST "Son of Kong" (not the re-recording) exists anywhere, but the OST of "SHE" (1935) which BYU issued (now out of print, but a European bootleg is available) has the same kind of orchestration and recording sound as the OST KKong. The score itself is more languid and less actiony, but does recycle a few riffs from Kong. Anyway, it's a good companion to Ray Faiola's Kong cd.

I keep sending bootleg notices to eBay and they keep coming back like termites. Occasionally, an original SAE pressing of our SHE album pops up on eBay and I very much recommend it since it not only is a great soundtrack, but is a wonderful souvenir of the film itself with great notes and images. After we reissue THE SEARCHERS, I'm hoping that we get to reissue SHE as I've recently acquired a better-sounding set of 78's of the score (Max had multiple sets pressed of LOST PATROL, THE INFORMER, SHE and the famous four sides of KING KONG). I've heard the booklet was pretty extensive on the original release. Will you mix and match with the old 78s for the best sound, or are the new 78's better overall?

Aug 4 12 10:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, the 78 "sets" comprise about 80 per cent of the soundtrack score. There were also some aluminum discs as well as a couple of cue parts that came from the composite soundtrack. But getting to re-do this score will be a ways away. Besides, I have to say that the Morgan and Stromberg re-recording is nothing short of miraculous and should be in the library of every lover of truly great film scores.
