Paul Denham wrote:That's the problem for someone like me- Ridley has gone and done this to all his films on Bd . It's by his hand they look like this now. They all have a teal/orange bias. The natural look of blue denim and blue skies in Thelma and Louise has been shifted and skies and blue denim all lean towards teal. UGH! Nothing says phony and unrealistic like a teal atmosphere . It's a joke at this point because it's such a cliche- but he keeps imposing this on all his films. Blade Runner used to have plenty of warm earth tones in many scenes- no more. You may get a better idea of the extent of the changes made to Alien by looking at The BR comparison because of the choice of shots Beaver uses on that one. Hell, for that matter this is about the extent of the difference in the natural look of T&L, compared to the new Blu-ray as well. I think the only classic film of his that might have escaped this is Legend - and that would have been because Universal 'cheaped' out and didn't have him oversee it. Par for the course I guess with 70s auteurs and the representation of their films in the 21st century. It seems like they all need to feel relevant again, so they latch on to the latest fad and impose that on aged classic. So what hope is there that the film will get a 'natural' remastering consistent with how it looked in it's original theatrical release when the director signs off on this revisionist look? And if people complain about DNR taking away the "natural" look of film, how much difference is there when new color grading makes it look just as artificial just in a different way? It might be one thing if scenes were color timed independently (and globally) to be cooler or warmer- but that's not why Teal & Orange is such an obnoxious trend. It's because these complimentary shadings can't really exist within the same shot without there being artificial manipulation.
