An internet friend recently sent me a spare, un-open copy he had of Classic Media's GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN.
Being dirt poor, I've missed out on the Media Blasters releases of THE MYSTERIANS and so on, and so far my only exposure to Japanese language R1 Godzilla DVDs have been the Sony discs of a few years ago. It was awesome to see SON ON GODZILLA. GODZILLA VS HEDORAH and MECHAGODZILLA subtitled and widescreen. I was less happy to see GMK straddled with mere "dubtitles" like a lot of the boot legs that have been floating around all these years. And all the Sony discs had really, really, really bad graphic design.
The Classic Media's box for GRA is beautiful! It even has representations of the latest version of those little round stickers of Godzilla that were always pasted somewhere on an any official Toho sanctioned Japanese Godzilla kaiju toy.
I nearly wept seeing the menus!
As someone who spent thousands of hours of my own free time in the 90's translating and subtitling various Godzilla films in a fan sub effort that never got anywhere, the quality subtitles in GRA or Sony's SON OF GODZILLA warms my heart.
Classic Media goes several steps ahead of just having accurate subtitles though! Steve Ryfle is an affable and entertaining host to the audio commentary for the GIGANTIS THE FIRE MONSTER version of the film also included on the disc.
