I received my dvd set of GOJIRA/GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS today and watched GODZILLA tonight. The thing that struck me as odd was the end credits. I don't remember seeing them before. The film always stopped after "The End".
The audio commentary was informative. I never knew that the original American title was going to be GODZILLA, THE SEA BEAST. There are some interesting audio clips and Terry Morse, Jr., the son of the director of the American inserts, was brought in to talk a bit. He tells some fun stories. During the tent scene where Burr is lying next to his Japanese interpreter, one of the commentators says, "I'm tempted to make a BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN joke here, but I'll restrain myself." His co-commentator says, "Thank you." As a joke, it's sad and tired, but wouldn't it have been interesting to talk about the dominant/passive relationship that seemed to exist between Burr's Steve Martin and the Lt. Tomo? The film seems to make an effort to portray Tomo in a passive, "feminine" role next to Martin's more dominant one in certain scenes. With Burr being gay (which the commentators did not mention), it could have been an interesting angle for discussion.
