Dec 12 11 4:20 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some may find it a bit long, but I think it's an enjoyable movie. (And marks an early appearance by Gary Cooper.) It could be considered an early "buddy movie," and the emphasis is on friendship and valor. I wonder what kind of an audience it will find in this format, since it seems to be a Blu-Ray only release, and I wonder how many people (aside from film fans like we have here) are even aware of the movie these days? Paramount seems to have pretty much ignored the title after the VHS release of long ago. For the first film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, I think it deserved better treatment over the years. (But then, Paramount is the same studio that gave us at least four DVD releases of DeMille's TEN COMMANDMENTS, while they leave his SAMSON & DELILAH as the only major title from that director unreleased on DVD. Even a number of DeMille's silent films have come to DVD over the years...some more than once. Fortunately there is a company overseas that put SAMSON on a Region free DVD...I'm more than happy to give them my money if Paramount doesn't want it.) If I recall correctly, the story for WINGS came from John Monk Saunders (Fay Wray's first husband), who had been a flight instructor during WW I. He also wrote THE DAWN PATROL. (Probably the second version of that film, with Errol Flynn, is better-known today. There had been an earlier version shot in 1930 by director Howard Hawks.) I think if you're a serious film/collector/buff, you probably have a Blu-ray player. There's starting to be a lot of silents and 30's titles from Kino and Criterion. This is a collector's title.

True, but I'm curious as to what the ratio of serious film buffs to average mainstream consumers is when it comes to who is buying the majority of the Blu-Ray releases. Most folks here probably don't represent the norm. (Not saying that in a negative way; but I think most of us here tend to be more extreme with our passions/hobbies.) I actually still have my old 8mm reel of highlights from WINGS.

That's many of us, and it's people who want it for the latest CGI blockbuster. Same goals, different tastes. Obviously there are more people who want LORD OF THE RINGS than WINGS. However, I want WINGS more because it's on Blu-ray than if it were just coming out on DVD, it's novel to get a Blu-ray of a silent film from a studio. My expectation is that it's gonna look as good as a silent film can in my home, and it's kind of exciting. I don't own every silent film on DVD, even ones as worthy as WINGS. If the market for Blu-ray was over-saturated with similar titles (like DVD has been), I'd think it might possibly generate less interest than on Blu-ray.

A this point a lot of Blu-ray can be had for less than DVD-R, and usually the quality is there.
