Dec 16 11 9:56 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Great job, Gorgo! That would have been a more eye-catching package. I recall seeing a double feature of GOLDEN and 7TH. I'm thinking it was when GOLDEN was originally released. Maybe our theater owner just had a print of 7TH laying around. Sometimes their showing of older films didn't seem to correspond to any set rerelease dates. I know they showed CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB at about the same time DRACULA AD 1972 came out. Yeah, a film wouldn't necessarily have to go back into rerelease for a theater to still book it. We had one theater in our area do retro matinee showings on Saturday morning of Sixties sci-fi titles, and a couple of drive-ins that would always have a new film at the top of the bill followed by a film or two with a similar theme from a few years earlier to go with it. I remember when Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD came out; one drive-in paired it with Hammer's TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER...not exactly the first two films you'd think to link together, but at least I finally got to see the Lee film on a big screen. A few years earlier they ran the then-new FLESH GORDON with BARBARELLA.

It's also the first one I got to see in it's original theatrical release. This film is where I fell in love with Caroline, and was just floored by the Kali sequences, and the fight between the centaur and the griffin. I really think THIS was my Harry Potter! It also seems to be a favorite of many people who were/are into the "Dungeons & Dragons" role playing games. As one player explained to me at a party: "It has a specific goal, there are mysteries to be solved along the way, and creatures to be delt with... it's tone is more "adventure" than it is "fairy tale." But it remains a favorite for another reason: when it was shown at the Denver International Film Fest about 15 years ago, Ray was in attendance, and would later give a presentation on stop motion to a packed house that night. But, lo and behold! Someone had mixed the reels up when loading the projector system (which was on one of those lateral platters) So it wasn't going to be easily fixed... so, after most of the audiance had left, Ray got up and just visited with those of us still in the theatre. We chatted for about an hour, about art influences, various techniques for FX, and also about various film composers... I have never been happier about someone making a mistake, in all my life! Pretty much the same sentiments, and it was my first first-run Harryhausen experience as well. (Although I have a lot of nostalgia for 7th VOYAGE, as one local station used to show it every Thanksgiving when I was a kid. My cousins and I would be sprawled out on the floor watching it while waiting for the holiday dinner.) I remember when Columbia's 8mm division brought out the four reels of film for GOLDEN VOYAGE, and I saved up my lawnmowing money to buy the centaur/griffin fight. (I'm amazed I didn't wear that thing out.) While 7th VOYAGE and JASON also got the four reel treatment in 8mm, GOLDEN VOYAGE had 8. For some reason the first four reels (which were presented almost as stand-alone adventures and numbered out of sequence as I recall) were soon discontinued, with a second series of four reels replacing them and presenting the digests in chronological order the way 7th VOYAGE and JASON had been. (Each set of four had bits not found in the other set, so some die-hard Harryhausen fans would spend some time trying to track down and edit it all together.) When EYE OF THE TIGER found its way to the Super 8 market, Columbia took a "less is more" approach and gave us one 400' reel instead of four 200' reels like the earlier Harryhausen fantasies.

I understand the infatuation with Caroline Munro although I don't share it. Actually I think the fact that she's not really a dazzling beauty is part of her appeal. She has the face of the cute cheerleader you liked in high school --- pasted onto the body of a centerfold.
