Sometimes it is hard to differentiate between collecting and hoarding. I actually consider myself quite picky about what monster items I purchase. Some collectors have to buy EVERYTHING for their given collection, no matter how sub-standard, poor or truly awful the figure, model or artwork. You see this many times in the “show off your monster room” thread, fans who possess very, very extensive collections. However, often times the handful of truly outstanding items are lost among a sea of mediocrity. Quantity over quality. Obviously, some of the lesser items displayed have sentimental value and many times there will be long dry spells when there are literally no new products available in one’s area of interest. I believe that these long dry spells cause some collectors to be less picky than they might otherwise be if there was always a constant supply. It’s sad too, because, in my opinion, I would much rather see a few exceptional monster items displayed in an interesting manner than a tidal wave of trivial items stacked ten deep.

Right? I get your drift but I have a friend with several model kits which he has displayed atop his TV, on a cabinet, and across some wall shelving. But I wouldn't consider him a hoarder at all. They are neatly ordered and kept dusted so maybe neatness and cleanliness would be a factor distinguishing hoarder from collector?
I seem to have developed a problem quite at odds with some of the comments and sentiments on this thread -- I've run smack into a wall.

I don't know what kind of movies you have, but perhaps you could broaden your horizons a bit. If all you have are domestic releases, open yourself up to the world of foreign horror/sci-fi/fantasy. Mexican monster movies, Italian vampire & Giallo, Spanish horror, Japanese & other Asian horror. There's a ton of stuff out there that may be new to you. I, on the other hand, have 1000s of movies & TV shows on DVD, many DVR'd from cable TV. I search through books, magazines, and Internet sites devoted to obscure foreign, cult, and b-movies to find new fuel for the fire of my ever-expanding library of DVDs.

And to others, Sci-fi/horror/fantasy forms only a small part of the movies they love/collect. Some are also interested in westerns, comedies, silents, film noir, dramas, art house, suspense, world cinema, etc.
A collection of 3-4,000 fims barely scratches the surface.

Some of the rarer and trashier 70's titles go for obscene prices. I had most at decent but it now prices and some bidders cleared me out, snagging several titles at a time.

I own thousands as well and I probably watch well over 1000 features and shorts a year. With the constant grind of new releases, bootlegs, TCM and various other stations, it's nearly impossible that I'll ever watch 98% of them again. Yes, I have my favorites but even those aren't films I could watch every single year. There's just too much out there to really "hold on" to stuff for long.I've posted this before but I didn't finally breakdown and sell the majority of my DVDs. Before that I did make backup copies of all of them but now even these are just taking up space. I don't know an exact number but they're in the thousands. I don't really need them as the majority of them won't be watched again. They're just taking up space that could be used for something new my son will be getting soon. I don't have the heart to simply dump them in the trash even though that might be what they are since they're just collecting dust. I've thought about offering them for $1 each. I'm not certain what to do with them. I love movies but there's really no connection to these things. Why I haven't done something with them is beyond me. Perhaps someone in this thread can convince me what to do.
