Nov 19 11 11:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Which actor played the best "Van Helsing" in a DRACULA movie? Edward Van Sloan, Peter Cushing, Herbert Lom, Laurence Olivier or Anthony Hopkins? Or any other actor that I haven't listed. My favorite is of course "Peter Cushing".

Cushing, of course, is numero duo, though the Hammer Dracula films don't do much for me. I thought Nigel Davenport was quite good in the underrated Jack Palance version.

Nov 22 11 4:30 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Peter Cushing's acting is a joy to watch no matter what character, and his Van Helsing is a very rich characterization in HORROR OF DRACULA and BRIDES OF DRACULA. But I loves me some Eddie Van Sloan, especially in DRACULA with his battle of wills with the Count ("Indeed...hsssss!") Understated but very strong playing. Nov 22 11 7:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Cushing is great -- energetic, determined, suave, heroic... but it's not really the best VH as I envision from Stoker's description. I think Van Sloan is closer, though not as exciting. "Guy named Squeamy got thrown from the fifth floor. He's deader'n a mackerel."

I love 'em both, but Van Sloan certainly does have less to do, and Cushing does all that he has to do so very well...Saint Peter for me.

Now I have heard that John Carradine's portrayal of Count Dracula is the closest approximation to what Stoker envisioned though it is hands down for Bela Lugosi as the Best Dracula.

I read Stoker after seeing Van Sloan and Cushing, but before seeing the BBC production. Finlay's Van Helsing turned out to be exactly what I had been picturing in my mind while reading Stoker.
