I am personally against the death penalty, and my over-the-top GUILTY comments are in the context of this being a work of fiction.

However, one thing which bothers me about this movie, as one who is not that political, is what I can only call the "smug liberalism" of the script. The guys who are voting guilty are presented as bigoted and irrational and shallow, and rightly condemned, in contrast to those who when they switch their votes to innocent are presented as rational and fair-minded. Actually, I found several of the "innocent" voters at least as despicable as the bigots. The old geezer dismissed testimony on the basis of crazy psycho-babble extrapolations. The fellow with the moustache brushed aside all evidence with an "I don't think he would have come home" reasoning. That's sort of like me dismissing the Penn State charges on the basis of "a big shot coach would never molest little boys" reasoning. Another voted on the basis of "he wouldn't use a switchblade like that" although someone did and the guy who did, if not the boy, looked enough like him in age and size to fool a woman who knew him. The worst of course was the know-it-all Fonda inventing fantasy scenarios to discredit factual evidence.

I am with Tom Weaver on this one. It is certainly a well-acted, engrossing movie, and I was very impressed the first time I saw it. But as I get older, I find the script is shallow and manipulative and, if taken seriously, encourages a juror to disregard facts for suppositions, as long as you're voting innocent and therefore not "punishing" someone.
