Nov 18 11 1:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'd have to say, that my favorite part of the movie is when Fonda goes to the restroom and gets an earful from Jack Warden about the kid being guilty. But the BEST part is when Fonda corners Ed Binns' character about the kid's innocence or guilt. Binns, whose character isn't supposed to be the brightest guy in the room, hits Fonda with my favorite line ~ and I'm paraphrasing ~ "Suppose you get us all to change our vote, and the kid really DID knife his old man?" Nov 18 11 1:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Although I've never seen it, I've heard there's a reverse 12 ANGRY MEN storyline in an episode of MURDER, SHE WROTE - Jessica is on a jury that is ready to declare the accused not guilty, but she's still suspicious and has them go over pieces of evidence until she convinces them all that the suspect is actually guilty.

Hiowever, the film is so well acted and directed that you really don't stop to think about how improbable it is until it's over. Everytime a sitcom such as ALL IN THE FAMILY or HAPPY DAYS ripped off 12 ANGRY MEN, the lone holdout on the jury (Edith Bunker, Fonzie, etc.) turned out to be right. In this film, we never find out if Fonda's right or not.

"Yeah, maybe the lady eyewitness is lying, trying to send an innocent man to his death, because she saw a trial as a chance to sit on the witness chair without her glasses and look gorgeous. I bet she figured it was WORTH an innocent kid's life to be in a courtroom without her glasses. Yeah, I bet that's EXACTLY what she did. Not guilty!!" -- holy Cloud KooKooLand!!

But again, that's clearly not the point of the piece. Which is: Should the men have taken a little time to be sure one way or the other, instead of rushing off to a ballgame, hurrying back to their more interesting lives, or voting based on assumptions they brought into the room? Considering that the boy might have a date with Ol' Sparky, an' all? The answer is, yes. The tool used in such cases is supposed to be Deliberation, not Preconception. (But what do I know? I think that the shallow, knee-jerk way many chose to handle political and social decisions in this country today is a damnable shame.) -Craig

If you're Fonda, as much time as it takes to make every single one of those guys see it your way and have a "Not Guilty" verdict. Earlier in the piece it was suggested to just declare a hung jury due to disagreement, but Fonda wanted no part of that. So okay, they take the time. And as Tom said, all the jurors ultimately wound up behaving irresponsibly by allowing Fonda to sway them - and with idiotic "what if's", nothing at all concrete!
