I really liked Nobutero Yuuki's take on the Matsumoto style with his character designs for Captain Herlock Endless Odyssey. On another note, it's frustrating to be a U.S. Yamato fan and see all these new projects coming out like this, the live-action film and the Yamato Rebirth film, and nothing is released over here.

Too bad, because when he was at his peak, his work was amazing. But, if it weren't for Yoshinobu Nishizaki coming up with the initial idea and getting it funded, and hiring Matsumoto, there would be no YAMATO. I agree, in part. I wish that if they couldn't get Matsumoto, they could have gotten Kaoru Shintani or someone with a similar drawing style. So much of Starblazers' appeal to me was the Matsumoto's spaceships and distinct character designs. . His most recent projects have been a bit weak only because he's a better artist than writer, and because current 2D computer animation doesn't fit his style very well. I can't stand Nobuteru Yuki's annoyingly feminine designs for the male characters. Even Desslok and Lysis look "sensitive". Captain Avatar is the only one that doesn't look like he stepped out of a girl's romance comic. The spaceships on this remake look nice, though.

But, for YAMATO: 2199, it was decided to go in a fresh, original direction.
