I would normally want to apologize for such harsh judgement against someone, as some of you who know me on this board know me as generally light-hearted and good natured. But this whole thing f--king pisses me off. Royally. Long and storied coachiing career be damned. I don't care. There was absolutely NO EXCUSE. To have known about this since 2002. Nov 9 11 3:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Looks like he's going at the end of the season.....which I think is probably about right, given that he wasn't actually involved in what was happening and did not witness the incident in question. He should definitely go, and is not blameless, but apparently he is being accused more of unethical behavior than illegal behavior. If he were being actually charged with something he should have been fired immediately. The main reason I think he should be allowed to play out the season isn't so much for him as for his team, who have nothing to do with any of it and shouldn't be punished for it by losing their coach. I've seen cases where teams have lost coaches while the season is going on [and not for anything near as horrible as this] and it puts them at an extreme disadvantage. The graduate assistant [now a coach] who witnessed what was going on and did nothing should be charged...I find the story so unpleasant that I'm avoiding all the details of it [people online who have read the court documents said they wished they could "unread" them, so I'm just not even going to look at them.] I don't know for sure who is in trouble other than the perv former coach and the two university officials who covered it up. Paterno's reputation is ruined anyway, I think that's enough punishment. He is old enough that when he does pass away this will be the first thing people remember. The university is going to be paying for this a long time, as they should.

Nov 9 11 5:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I want to say for Paterno, there is much about this story which confuses me while reading about it. I want to know more. Supposedly, a graduate student (implying to me he was in his twenties) actually saw Sandusky sodomizing a 10 year old boy in the shower, but simply walked away. A mother is quoted as saying Sandusky apologized to her for inappropriate behavior. Why didn't either of these two report the incident to the police? as they had first hand information, which Paterno didn't. Paterno did report the incident to his superiors. They apparently didn't investigate or covered it up. My bottom line is I'm not certain exactly how much Paterno knew or what this graduate student told him. The graduate student seems far more culpable to me as he did not intervene at the time and had first hand information. And why a parent was fooling around talking to Sandusky rather than the police is also beyond my understanding. I prefer to withhold judgement against Paterno until I learn more about what exactly he knew and when he knew it. I see no reason, on the face of it, that he shouldn't have trusted his superiors to do the right thing.

Nov 9 11 6:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It sounds like it's a case of the trustees really wanting him out now, but he has so much pull that it's going to be really difficult to get him to do anything he doesn't want to do. The general consensus on the various sports talk shows seems to be that he really shouldn't be at the remaining games even if he does remain until the end of the season. Heard a reporter on the radio say that they have been investigating this for the past year, and that a lot of the rumors have been floating around a lot longer than that, but no one would ever go on the record.

In hindsight he "may not have done enough" (which is ALL he's being accused of here), but he didn't sweep it under the rug, he did notify the university. Say you have a good friend you've trusted for years, and a third party tells you something shocking about them. Do you automatically run to the police without firsthand proof? The fault lies with those above him. Paterno has always conducted himself and his program with dignity, up to and including this incident. He agreed to retire last night, but it wasn't enough for those looking to find scapegoats and protect their jobs and incomes. And read his statement after being fired over the phone - it's honest and not bitter, asking for calm and to keep your eyes on the bigger picture. I'll never fault him for this unless it is proven he knew way more and did nothing. SAM33

But hopefully, the world had learned from those terrors; this all happened more recently, and so should have been handled better - on all sides. A helpful exercise: Think_of_the_kids. Then, remember back to your own childhood, and imagine you were one of them...

How could anyone turn their back and look away from anything like that? To save someone elses career? To save face? To not be involved? Yeah real tough of these bozos. What great men they are. Lock em up and throw away the key.

So what if he took it to the heads of the Univeristy, he should NOT have stopped there. If you know your neighbor is killing people, and you tell one group of people and they are obviously not going to do anything about it, do you just shrug your shoulders and say "well, I tried." If it was alleged to me by an eyewitness that one of my employees was doing something like this at work, everything would STOP until the fellow was either exonerated or in jail. No, I would not simply inform the higher-ups and go about my business--I would not work one more minute with the guy until I was satisfied there was nothing to it. He worked with the guy for 9 more years with the situation unresolved. Beloved, successful or not, you cannot stand by while children are literally sodomized in your workplace. Sandusky may have been sharing them with donors. A sports writer - Patrick Toomay, I think? - was just on HARDBALL, and compared the behavior of college sports organizations in situations like this to the Mafia, suggesting that there was a large, long-lived, many-person, coverup of all this.

Nov 11 11 2:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	From what I'm reading, this may end up being one of the biggest scandals anywhere, in or out of sports, if even half of what I'm seeing is true. What I can't figure out is why they're letting the guy who witnessed the incident in the shower keep his job, it seems that he was the worst in that he was in a position to actually run in there and do something, or call the authorities while it was happening, and chose not to. Everyone else only heard about it secondhand. I think there's a good chance that the school knew about all of it long ago, and forced Sandusky to retire. His retirement occurred at a very young age for a football coach [in his 50s] and it seems weird he would retire at an age where most coaches are just starting to peak.

BUT, even though they did that, they still gave him full access to everything on campus. All they said was "don't bring the kids around here" but they never stopped him from doing so.
