Joe Karlosi wrote:Craig, I honestly can't ever recall such craziness as this. Not speaking just for "which is the best DVD", but also for "how many versions of the actual film are there?" But even if PHANTOM is not unique in this situation, what does that have to do with anything as far as our frustrations in trying to determine the best version of POTO are concerned? Does the fact that perhaps other movies have been as tough change anything?

What dh said, basically. Though for my part, believe me, I prefer to own the '25; it's the original, and the '29-'30 is a redo. I grew up with the redo, but the first time I watched the original, I found it a clearly better movie overall.
Joe, maybe you don't recall the scads of versions, from scads of companies, that used to be out there of titles like NOSFERATU and METROPOLIS. Different speeds, different qualities, different scores, different tints, even different cuts - much the same case as with POTO. But beyond the frills of speed, score, & tint (which as dh says, are largely taste) there are really just TWO basic POTO's to chose from: a shorter '29-'30, and a longer '25.
The POTO case is not as uniquely complicated as the several threads here are making it, that's all. Watch the two versions, and decide which one you prefer. (Just as with the original STAR WARS or the redos.)

Of course, it wouldn't be perfect, but it's the method they used for the restored METROPOLIS< Agreed, and that would be a great improvement, TM! But as we've seen over the years from several video releases, these entities don't always share print material like they should. -Craig
