I got anything as a kid that was about monsters or ghosts and found this in a bookstore when I was like 7 or so. The stories(obviously) took some time to know, but they were spooky and wonderful. "Oh whistle and i'll come to you, my lad" is one of the best ghost stories. And "Casting the Runes" is an all-time classic, among others. Recently, i've been reading Algernon Blackwood and Albert Machen, also expert practicioners in the macabre. Machen and Blackwood created the genesis of what Lovecraft would follow up in his cosmic universe. Tonight I read H.G. Well's "The Red Room", a very creepy, if underrated, spooky tale that really gave me the chills!

Nov 10 11 11:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Lady Cynthia Asquith did a series of collections of ghost stories in the 1920s. 1930s, and 1950s. I think all of them are available in old paperbacks that are easy to find through online vendors. Peter Haining also did collections in the 1960s and 1970s, and a number of them had themes related to celebrated horror films. H.

Nov 11 11 3:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'd recommend The Oxford Book of English Ghost Stories Chosen by Michael Cox and R A Gilbert. Lots of the greats in there. I'm a big fan of MR James and would also recommend L P Hartley. One of my favourites is The Omnibus of 20th Century Ghost Stories, ed Robert Philips. The US title was Triumph of the Night and it includes a lot of stories from writers you don't normally associate with the genre. Russ

Greenberg FAR BELOW edited by Robert Weinberg WEIRD TALES edited by Marvin Kaye The first three are all from the 1940's and have wonderful Lee Brown Coye illustrations. All feature stories (primarily) from the golden age of the pulps, and its all wonderful stuff. I should also note that all are easily found on eBay or through AbeBooks....

Are there any yearly volumes in this series that are more consistent and worthwhile than others ? Any other anthologies (yearly or otherwise) that are worth looking into? The Datlow series? Jun 29 12 1:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Not an anthology as many people use the term, but Project Gutenberg on the web has a lot of Sheridan le Fanu, everything (I think) by Maupassant (around 900 pages if I remember correctly), Lovecraft, and Arthur Machen. The site has many of M.R. James' stories, although I think everything he wrote in horror (and some of his scholarly work) on various websites through a simple search. The site also has some nice 1930s science fiction, much of which borders on horror.

Jul 9 12 6:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, I'd say that a good starting point would be the Pan Books of Horror Stories - 30 volumes that ran from 1959 to 1989. Admittedly, the earlier volumes were better than the later ones but they're certainly worth collecting. The Fontana Books of Ghost Stories are good too, edited by one of my favourite authors, the great Robert Aickman. If the occult is your thing then The Mayflower Books of Black Magic Stories are good, edited by Michel Parry. I can't remember how many of those there are off the top of my head. There are lots of fun ones too that were brought out under the names of genre stars of the day, The Boris Karloff Horror Anthology, at least a couple under Christopher Lee's name, several Hitchcock ones too. I would also recommend a series of anthologies edited by Bill Pronzini in the early 80s : CREATURE!, VOODOO!, SPECTRE!, WEREWOLF! and MUMMY! Also, Stephen Jones' "Mammoth" series for Robinson / Carrol and Graf -- and the current Wordsworth Mystery and Supernatural books are unbelievable bargains.
