Santa (not Santo) Meets Satan |
Lead | |
|
Having heard for years about the 1959 Mexican movie SANTA CLAUS (brought to us in the U.S. by good ol' K. Gordon Murray), I was surprised to find it in a display of $1.99 Christmas DVDs at K-Mart. No wrestling, but makes a fine companion piece to SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS (yet another DVD in the $1.99 rack). A friend of mine recalls a local theatre in the 1960s running these as a double bill.

I just ordered a copy of that loopy SANTA CLAUS movie from Creepy Classics. It's really one of the worst films ever made, but it does have a nostalgic charm for me, as I have vague memories of seeing it a kiddie matinee(actually one of my earliest going to the movies memories).

I saw SANTA CLAUS at one of those Saturday & Sunday only kiddie matinees where all the seats were 50 cents. Also saw JACK THE GIANT KILLER that way.

Too bad today's multiplexes don't have the kiddie matinees, anymore. (But then, if they did dust off some of these for the big screen, would we see kids or Monster Kids taking up most of the seats?) Those were the days!

Genius Entertainment has released this title. I've seen it available at various Dollar Trees and 99 Cent stores in the SoCal area, for... a buck (or less). A great copy of the K. Gordon Murray dub, respelendant with all the gaudy color I remember from my kiddie matinee days. God knows I wouldn't pay more than a buck for this.

Santa Claus VS Satan … He Already Kicked Jesus' Ass | ||

The MST3K show built around the film Santa Claus was easily one
of their best shows. It was a marvelous transfer they used and the MST3K crowd showed a lot less contempt for the film than usual while still hitting the
risible elements perfectly. The original Mexican film has, in its way, a certain integrity (it does not condescend, it's fairly well-done for its budget,
and it's sincere as hell) so the folks at MST3K had a lot to go on. The sheer weirdness of the film almost overpowers the antics of the MST3K crowd. At one
point when Santa Explains how sin is punished and piety gets you presents the one of the MST3K crowd say, "That's some pretty strange theology
Santa." Indeed!

I can only wonder what would happen if they tried to riff on what sounds like the oddest Mexican Kiddie film ever made, Little Red Riding Hood and the Monsters. Now there is a film I should track down. If you check out the website http://www.kgordonmurray.com/index.html you will find this title and a lot of other fun stuff as well. I've seen it listed in the original Spanish-language version on Amazon but does anyone know if it has an English subtitle option? ![]() ![]() ![]()
SYNOPSIS:
Deep in the bowels of the Haunted Forest, all the monsters of the world gather together in the residence of their leader, the Queen of Badness, who lives in a spooky castle high atop a mountain. These abhorrent ghouls include the Frankenstein monster, the Vampire, Bluebeard the Pirate, Carrothead, Father Hurricane, the Killer Robot, and the Siamese twins, "2-in-1". The assembled fiends sing a song about how they are the most evil monsters in the world, and how they must capture the only two good people left on earth: Tom Thumb and Little Red Riding Hood! They have also gathered to decide the fate of two prisoners: the Ferocious Wolf, and the Friendly Red-Headed Ogre, who sit in chains before them. The Queen of Badness assures the monsters that they can lure Red and Tom to them by using their longtime companions, the Wolf and the Ogre, as bait. The Queen of Badness sits as judge, the monsters as jury, and the Vampire as prosecuting attorney in this mock trail of our two good-hearted heroes. The Vampire tells of the two fairy tales heroes' crimes, while the Ogre and Wolf protest in vain: the Queen of Badness will hear none of it. Meanwhile, the Wolf's pal, Stinky the Skunk, peeks in through a window, worried for his friend's future. The Queen asks the Wolf and Ogre how they plead: not guilty. Regardless, the Queen of Badness pronounces sentence: death by torture! Meanwhile, in another part of the haunted forest, Little Red Riding walks with her good pal, Freddy the Dog, and picks flowers. She seeks her good pal, Little Tom Thumb, who is hiding from her. Red sings a song requesting him to come out of hiding and join her. Stinky the Skunk runs through the forest, and eventually finds Red. Stinky tells Red the horrible situation with his boss, the Wolf, and the Ogre. Red listens, horrified, and promises to help rescue them. The Queen of Badness and her sister, the Old Witch, appear out of thin air, and plan mischief on a nearby village. She poisons the town's water supply. Stinky and Red hear a horrible laugh: the Queen of Badness! In the village, the sun beats down mercilessly, and the people get horribly thirsty. They drink the contaminated water, which turns the adults into chimpanzees, and the children into white mice! Stinky, Red and Tom go to Red's mother's house, and see the Queen of Badness's horrible curse in effect; even Red's mother is a monkey! Before the trio leaves, Tom thoughtfully leaves a block of cheese for the mice-children. Back at the castle, the Wolf and Ogre are in prison, bickering over who is at fault for their current predicament. They sing a song about how great each of them is, and how easy it should be to escape if they both use their especial qualities. The prison guard, 2-in-1, gleefully tells the Wolf and Ogre of the terrible tortures that await them. Carrothead arrives, carrying a steaming plate of roast pig, but only offers the food to the prisoners if they reveal the whereabouts of Little Red Riding Hood and Tom Thumb! The monsters taunt the prisoners by eating the delicious meat in front of them. 2-in-1 gives the Wolf and Ogre their empty plate to lick clean, and the two starving prisoners fight over it. They end up striking each other repeatedly over the head with their balls-and-chain, to the guards' joy. As Red, Tom, Stinky and Freddy begin their treacherous journey through the Haunted Forest, they encounter the Fairy of Dawn, who tells them that if they have faith in God, they can conquer evil. The good Fairy then makes Tom Thumb grow, so he is the same size as a real live boy! Back in the castle dungeon, the Wolf and Ogre, their heads now bandaged from their earlier squabble, settle their differences, and agree to work together. In order to stave off starvation, they fantasize that they are eating a great feast. In the castle laboratory, the Queen of Badness looks in her crystal ball to locate her enemies. She sees Red and the gang at the signpost for her property. As soon as the gang enters the Queen's property, they are stalked by ghoulish monsters. The Queen of Badness is angered by the youngsters' fearlessness, and she calls out her monster guards. As Red and the gang walk further, they become apprehensive. Meanwhile, Stinky is petrified. Out of nowhere, bizarre animal-men attack the gang, who run away. The Old Witch returns, and reports that Red and her cohorts have yet to be subdued. The Queen of Badness is disgusted by Red's innocence, and unleashes her secret weapon. As the gang runs away from the animal people, Red trips and falls, becoming trapped underneath a human skeleton! Suddenly, a killer robot approaches! As Stinky rescues Red, Tom fires his slingshot at the robot's head, and short-circuits the mechanical monster. Back in the dungeon, the Wolf and Ogre remove their bandages, revealing huge lumps on their heads. They decide they must fight to escape, and not wait around to be rescued. In another part of the castle, Carrothead and 2-in-1 discuss their upcoming tortures of the two hapless prisoners. Back in the Haunted Forest, Red and the gang are chased by another of the animal people. While trying to avoid being eaten by a man-eating plant, Tom Thumb is captured by Bluebeard, who stuffs him in a burlap sack. Red and Stinky call for their friend, but in vain. Bluebeard next attempts to bag Red and Stinky, but Freddy attacks him, and as the monster and canine struggle, the two heroes escape Bluebeard's net. Stinky then sticks his butt in Bluebeard's face, and sprays him with his awful stink. Bluebeard covers his eyes and howls in pain. Red and Stinky tie Bluebeard up. They hear Tom Thumb cry for help. They run to where Tom is imprisoned, and open the sack, releasing Tom and some other children which Bluebeard had kidnapped earlier. Red and the gang run back to Bluebeard. They are about to beat him up, but Stinky has a better idea: hang him from a tree! Stinky prepares the rope, and he and Tom hoist Bluebeard up the tree, feet first. While hanging upside-down, the children beat Bluebeard to a pulp with big sticks. Red intervenes, saying they should forgive their enemies. The others reluctantly agree, and all run off, leaving Bluebeard for dead. The Queen of Badness is furious at her henchmens' incompetence. She prepares an even more dastardly weapon. The Queen invokes Satan to create a full moon, to move up the torture/execution of the Ogre and Wolf. Lightning flashes, and the Queen howls with laughter; she knows her evil prayers will be answered. The Wolf and Ogre sense that something bad is about to happen. Meanwhile, Carrothead and 2-in-1 prepare their next torture. The Wolf and Ogre plan a trap for the stupid Carrothead; they pretend to be harboring a wealthy flea-heiress, Madame Panfleata! Luckily, the addle-brained vegetable-man falls for the hoary ruse; he opens the cell to see the multi-millionaire insect, and is promptly overpowered by the two wily prisoners, who escape their cell, and run through the Queen's catacombs, encountering the skeletons of unfortunate prisoners along the way. The Queen of Badness sends Father Hurricane to the caves, to blow the prisoners back to their cell. The Wolf and Ogre fight valiantly, but are forced back into the caves, where they are set upon by the Queen's horrible animal people. Meanwhile, Red and the gang have reached the entrance to the Queen's catacombs, and enter. They are immediately attacked by the animal people, but again Tom's quick thinking sets them free. In the torture chamber, the Wolf and Ogre are chained to racks, where they are to be cut to pieces by a giant circular saw. The Queen herself tells the prisoners their fate. To begin the torture, the guards tickle the prisoners' feet with feathers until they almost faint from laughter. Next, the Wolf and Ogre are force-fed water from a giant jug, until their stomachs expand and almost burst. Red and the gang next encounter Father Hurricane, who tries to blow the heroes out of the cave. He is able to corral Red and Tom, but Stinky attacks Father Hurricane with a torch, and he lets go of the heroes. Red and Tom tickle Father Hurricane into a catatonic state, after which Stinky conks him with a boulder. Red knocks him out cold with a club, then asks him to forgive her. The Wolf and Ogre are so full, they spit water at each other. The guards start the saw, and our heroes' fate seems sealed. Red and the gang arrive at the Queen of Badness's castle, and find their imprisoned friends. Tom fires a slingshot at Carrothead and 2-in-1, who think each other hit them. They pick up sledge hammers and start beating each other up. Red and the gang enter the cell, and turn off the saw just in time. The Wolf is ecstatic to see his friend Stinky; they hug and kiss. The Wolf and Ogre are freed, and the gang runs out of the cell, towards the Queen's headquarters. The Queen of Badness tells her sister to capture Red by all means. Red and the gang are attacked by vampire bats, and Red is separated from the others. The Old Witch corners her in a cave. The Vampire next appears, and hypnotizes the Ogre. As he is about to bite the Ogre's neck, the Ogre comes to, and knocks the Vampire out cold. The children run through the forest, trying to locate Red and the gang. The Old Witch brings Red to the Queen of Badness, who mocks her innocence and beauty. The children encounter the Fairy of Dawn, who tells them that with faith in God, they can conquer evil. She bestows upon the village children the magical powers of Valor, Perseverance, and Gratitude. Meanwhile, Tom and the gang look for Red in vain. The Queen of Badness ties Red up by her throne, and orders Frankenstein to go out and find the others. Tom and the gang are attacked by a giant Dragon and Frankenstein at the same time. Tom again shoots at his enemies with his slingshot, and knocks out Frankenstein, but the Dragon steps on the Wolf, and things look bad. The Queen of Badness watches the action through her crystal ball, and is pleased. The Old Witch gives a cheer for evil. The freed children join Tom and the gang, and throw rocks at the Dragon, eventually knocking him over. Tom shoots a rock directly into the Dragon's mouth, putting out his fire. The gang heads directly for the Queen of Badness's lair. The Queen has now tied Red to a chair in her laboratory, and prepares to make Red drink a super-bomb potion, which will turn her into a living atom bomb! The gang hears Red's screams, and bursts into the Queen of Badness's laboratory. The Queen warns them all to stay away, for if she drops the beaker with the bomb potion, the whole place will blow up. The Ogre knocks the beaker out of the Queen of Badness's hands, and the gang tosses the beaker around in a deadly game of "Keep Away". The Old Witch is accidentally thrown the beaker, but she is so caught up in the game, she throws in back to the gang. The Queen of Badness corners Red as she holds the beaker, and pleads with her to give it back. Red pretends to acquiesce, but as the Queen reaches for the deadly vessel, Red pulls it away, forcing the Queen to fall into her fiery furnace. The Old Witch tries to escape on her broom, but the Ogre captures her. The Old Witch pleads with the gang for mercy, saying she isn't really bad, only an underpaid employee of the Queen. Red, with her all-forgiving heart, agrees to let her live. In gratitude, the Old Witch removes the Queen of Badness's original spell on the village, and all of the people return to their original forms. The Old Witch snaps her fingers, and everyone is magically transformed back to the forest. The Fairy of Dawn appears, and tells them that the Queen's castle has burnt to the ground. The Fairy grants the Old Witch her only wish, to be a normal person again, and changes her dingy rags into a flowing white gown. Everyone walks happily through the forest, as the Fairy of Dawn leads them all in a song about how faith, hope and charity can conquer all evil.

Re: LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD MEETS THE MONSTERS
I have an English dub of this with the onscreen title LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD AND TOM THUMB. As I recall, LRRH and friends defeat the hurricane monster (just a hairy guy with ugly make-up who can exhale with hurricane force) by tickling him to the ground then ripping out big handfuls of his chest hair and stuffing it in his mouth so that he can't blow anymore.

I've seen clips, stills (maybe even the trailer) for LITTLE RED, but not the actual feature. (I remember trailers for a number of those bizarre fairy
tales playing on TV, as a kid.) Somehow, I missed the MST3K version of SANTA CLAUS, alas. (They should be release that on its own, with both the complete
feature and the MST3K versions on the DVD. They can bill it as the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 Christmas Special!)

I watched SANTA CLAUS on Movieflix a few years ago. Weird to be sure, with a really strange musical soundtrack. K. Gordon Murray - God Bless him!
I remember the ads for the KIDDIE MATINEEs for all of these features, usually playing the WESTOVER THEATRE in Southside Richmond, Va. Thank God my Mom didn't drop me off at these while she was doing her XMAS shopping. She took me to pictures like GORGO, THE HAUNTING & GOLIATH AND THE VAMPIRES instead! |
