Back in the pre-VCR days of the 1970s, I picked up a Super 8mm reel of highlights from the film sold by Ken Films for the home movie projector. Until a TNT broadcast of the film one Halloween night in the early 1990s (part of a vampire film marathon hosted by Christopher Lee, surprisingly), I had never seen the complete film. Fortunately, I popped a tape into the VCR and recorded it, as I've never seen the film shown since.

Dec 23 05 12:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When I think back on some of the films I taped when I first got my VCR, only to record over them as time passed...especially those that NEVER show up on TV anymore. (Such as Peter Cushing's FURY AT SMUGGLER'S BAY.) At last, we know what Steve Zodiak looks like in color! (My old B&W Gerry Anderson DVDs will never look the same.)

Jan 2 06 9:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I had an 8mm film of this long ago . . . and it was the short, three-minute(!) version. It was almost surreal. One line of dialogue in subtitles, maybe "Die, fiend!" as the hero pushes the vampire down, presumably into the sun. The rest of the film is the vampire melting. Then, it's over. Talk about a lack of motivation. I still haven't seen any more of this film than that.

Jan 3 06 10:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was lucky; I had/have the longer 8mm reel, about 8-10 minutes long. No actual ballerina footage, however. Unlike Castle Films, Ken Films (who released VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA for the home movie collector) did not do the best job of editing for the 8mm market. Castle Films could take a film like SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, condense it down to a 4 minute reel, and you had very well done digest.

I remember two vampires melting at the end, a male and a female. The scene was quite lengthy and elaborate and seemed quite satisfying in 1960.

Oct 29 06 8:32 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This is one of those rare films that I actually have a lucid memory about viewing originally at the theater. I would have been 9 at the time. My mother, sister and I were visiting my grandparents in Illinois and one night my Mom and some of my aunts gathered some of us together and piled into one of my Grandad's huge ancient cars and went to the drive-in. At some point in the movie being shown, there was a scene between a beefy young man and a gorgeous Italian starlet who, in a short nightgown, was showing a startling amount of leg. My Mom made some comment about this, and my aunt offered that films were getting "pretty sexy". Of course, to a 9 year old, this didn't mean anything, but the sight of all that flesh must have been having some impact on me, because many years later when I viewed a video copy of this movie, I immediately recognized the scene when it played. And if my Mom and sister thought that bit was hot, imagine what they thought of all the derierre on display. Yes, a pretty sexy horror for the time. "No! You stay here. Look out for more zombies..."

Do any of you remember which film you saw with BALLERINA? I still love to show double-bills which originaly played together. A few years back I ordered a VHS tape of the TNT showing (my original one had very poor reception quality) from Midnight Video. I haven't checked their site in a long time (I should have before posting this!) but anyone who wants a copy should check there. I also got a very nice print (albeit full frame) of THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH from this company. I also had the little Ken Films reel. When I showed this to some buddies at college I remember that they all cracked up over one of the superimposed titles which read, "Oh, how succulent!" I would definitely patronize the ballet more often if there were ballerinas like these gals. ZD

ZD, glad to hear there's someone else that likes to do films paired up as they played on drive-in double bills. My first viewing of VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA was the little 8mm digest, so don't know what it was initially paired with. (Yes, the subtitles on that reel invoked more chuckles than chills. I still have it and occasionally fire the old projector up to see monsters on a B-I-G screen.) I still have my old VHS of the TNT Halloween broadcast of long ago, with Christopher Lee hosting the commercial breaks during their vampire movie marathon that night.

The best translation would be "The Vampire's Bride" or "The Vampire's Mistress". Litterally, it would be "The Vampire's Lover", but the problem is that in English the words "vampire" and "lover" are neither masculine nor feminine - the Italian title makes clear that the vampire is a man, and his lover a woman...
