PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - So where are we at in 2011?

Nov 6 11 1:30 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm going to muddy the waters. The character of the "Lantern Man" has always been attributed to Snitz Edwards. I don't know if it's Snitz or not, but the close-up revels it is actually D'Arcy Corrigan. Corrigan (best known to horror fans as the Morgue Keeper in MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE and a villager in THE INVISIBLE MAN and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN) was very tall and thin. The Lantern Man does not appear to have the same body type. So, conceivably, it could be two different actors. According to the IMDb, Corrigan's first screen credit is in May 1925. PHANTOM, which was shot prior to that, is not mentioned in his filmography. That doesn't really mean squat, because he could have been doing non-credited extra work prior to May. But, by 1929, he was an established character actor, and had just completed THE LAST WARNING at Universal. So it is possible, however unlikely, that Corrigan was brought on board in 1929 to film one close-up of a character which he did not play in 1925. Or maybe he did. Who knows. I leave the ball in your court.

THAT seems to be the only place where there's any real, measurable, mystery involved!

The fragment was a loop filmed in Carl Laemmle's basement and tacked on to The Phantom of the Opera as a military recruitment prologue for the British market. If you read Lantern (Bryson) Man's lips he is saying, "For King and Country, join the Territorials today and stop the frenchie from placing our Royal Opera House in a state of disquiet. Cheerio." Due to an unfortunate miscommunication, the Lantern Man (actually a "forward observer") recruitment prologue was cut into every print EXCEPT the one intended for export to Great Britain -- with lamentable consequence. We have not just one, but several, prints extant that most folks have always accepted, based on the evidence that we have, to be the 1925 POTO (again, let's say to a content degree of >95?) Which means that proving an alternate theory that the actual 1925 was significantly different than the cut we have now, with NO supporting prints, requires a very heavy burden-of-proof. >But then, there's that nitrate '25 I watched. And as I've said several times, I think that's the only significant dispute about possible variation with the 1925 that we have now. I probably need to watch it again (both versions from the Milestone, I guess), pausing every couple of frames while I check back in on this thread. I jus' feels so dumb!

OK, gang, I had a buddy of mine reach out to one of the guys I noticed at that nitrate 35mm PHANTOM screening way back when, and I just heard back from him tonight. This guy has a good memory for minutiae, even after all these years, and he reports that: There was indeed a man with a lantern in the 1925 version of the film (which I admit I didn't remember at all). And he did get dialogue on a title card. So there it is. Sorry if I obfuscated the issue, but I'm glad I was able to get a second opinion. Now, the big question is, whatever happened to that damn print?

Listening to the classical station while hanging drywall this afternoon, caller #2 received 2 free tickets to a screening on April 22 at the historic Shea's Buffalo Theatre of the 1925 PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, with live accompaniment from not only the Mighty Wurlitzer organ but the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra as well. Some guy named Hal won. Sometimes it pays to be Number Two!! Woo hoo.

Jul 10 12 4:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Possibly some of you have read the original shooting-script, as I have not-- What do you think the Lantern Man was supposed to be? In the book the two rescuers descend into the underworld and, before finding the Phantom's lair, encounter two other figures: a ratcatcher and a strange unidentified figure that was perhaps supposed to be the original opera-ghost, whom Leroux claimed was real. The Lantern Man really doesn't seem like either one, though I didn't get any sense that it was a real spirit. NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!
