John Todd who played Tonto for over 20 years was not only not Native American, he wasn't American at all! He was a British Shakespearean actor. PS, I'm glad that LR in this does not seem to be wearing a powder blue ABBA jumpsuit, as manly as that might be, the black coat looks a lot better. Depp, eh, I'm still not sure about. I'm not so sure we can use examples of the OTR period when talking about races being portrayed. That was a much different time, with much different sensibilities. Mar 9 12 10:23 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Carl, agreed on both points - the character of Tonto needs to be richer, and it's a savvy choice to have The Ranger look like A Ranger! (That's why I posted the pic.) I do hope they don't go TOO far, though, and think that to remedy the imbalance of the Old Days, the way to go is,"So now, TONTO is boss, and The Ranger is a Big Dumb White Guy!" That's a funny Lenny Bruce routine, but not the right premise for this movie.

And why does the Ranger now sport a badge, when he was supposed to have buried all trace of his former identity so everyone would think all the rangers got wiped out in the ambush? Those two bits of nitpicking aside, I hope this is better than that wretched WB LONE RANGER TV movie from a few years back.

Mar 9 12 9:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm butting head with a guy in another site who says that the TRUE fans of the Ranger will see this new picture and say "it sucks." He says that if the powder blue jump suit isn't there, then it is NOT the Ranger. I posted pictures from the original magazines and such, that all show the Ranger in clothes OTHER than the blue suit. He said that to the true fan the TV show is the Ranger that everybody gauges things on. It has now moved into a discussion of masochistic enjoyment. Once he broke out the "true fan" argument, I knew it was a case of chasing my tail. I asked who exactly the true fans were? The radio show, comics, TV show, or who? I also explained that none of the incarnations really had the rabid following that the radio show had at one point. Or, from all I have read, that was the case. Granted, that was on a bunch of OTR sites, and they might be biased. All in all, I do take back my words against Depp, as long as he doesn't do some incredibly annoying accent that shounds like some guy from Florida trying to do what is considered an "indian accent." I would be cool with seeing him pull something like what Graham Greene did in MAVERICK, if they were to add a bit of comedy and respect to the culture still. Frankly, I'm just glad somebody's making a Lone Ranger movie. Can you imagine such a thing in 2012? A Lone Ranger movie? A WESTERN??? How often does THAT happen?

It's a shame actors and actresses are discouraged from doing what they were trained to just because they don't "look" the part. I guess Tennessee Williams was right. We are prisoners of our own bodies. And the political correctness fascists are the wardens (that's my addition). And Alec Guinness was right when he said to David Lean and Ronald Neame, "You people in films are only interested in types. You're not interested in anyone actually trying to act."
