Thanks Jojo I ordered BLACK WATER last week and just discovered it's by the same Director as THE REEF. I've never seen OPEN WATER. Should I skip it and go for OPEN WATER 2?

It had registered, however, that they both have scores by the same composer. OPEN WATER is essential as an early example of the genre. Looked like I was watching a DVD (the quality was great). I REALLY wanted to love this film, but I didn't. In fact, after the first attack (which was pretty amazing), I kind of stopped enjoying it all together. SPOILERS (I guess. I mean, aside from who gets killed and when, we pretty much know what to expect) - I did not love this movie. It was OK, but really, it wasn't much more than four uninteresting people dumped into the ocean and picked off one by one by documentary footage of a Great White Shark from The Discovery Channel's Shark Week. There was one amazing shot (I'm assuming aided by digital editing or SOMEthing digital) where the shark comes blasting by the four people and it really looks like it is RIGHT there with them...kind of (it still looked like the real footage of the shark was digitally placed in with the actors via clever editing/compositing). This is right before the first victim is claimed by the shark, and that attack, while not overly graphic at all, was so realistic that it kind of made me sick to my stomach. His dialog ("My legs are gone! Get away from me! It's gonna come back!") just sent shivers down my spine. He then dies in front of everyone (from bleeding out) and becomes shark food right before their/our eyes. Brrrrrrr. It had a lot of suspense, but after a while I found it more tedious and depressing than horrifying. People helplessly watching there friends die is really the entire plot of the film. Then, it's over. I was really psyched to see THE REEF, but I don't know man, when it was (finally) over, I just stared at the end credits and felt nothing. Well, I was really glad I didn't buy it, but other than that I felt nothing. I may have liked it a bit more than you, but I was also left feeling empty. * A FEW MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD* On the plus side, the two shots Rak mentioned are very effective. The director opted for subtlety rather than the easy shock treatment. Being so even handed made the kills far more disturbing and as realistic as a film like this can get. I thought the editing of the shark footage into the shots with the characters was extremely well done. I'd like to know how much was simple compositing, CGI, or practical effects. The performances were excellent and the first scene where panic sets in was like a punch in the gut. Their fear was palpable. On the negative side, I also thought it was a tad repetitive and tedious but, given the premise, I knew that the action would be limited. I was getting increasingly frustrated by Luke CONSTANTLY glancing into the water when he should be moving. Especially at the conclusion when they were appraoching land. He's sooo close and he's taking the time to stop, look and assess the situation and position of the shark. I would like to have seen the fate of Warren who stayed behind on the boat. Otherwise, I thought it was a fairly gripping 90 miutes. I have an open-ocean phobia, so maybe that factored into my enjoyment.

Then I heard about THE REEF and thought "I don't know, this sounds just like OPEN WATER". After seeing THE REEF, I have to say it was exactly what I thought OPEN WATER was going to be like. Aug 16 11 1:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	WUSSIES!! This film is like TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE in that the suspense is over the top and it's not a trip to the beach. Having items like the turtle and that floating board just out of reach kept the suspense high...brilliant. I'm totally impressed with the direction so I have high hopes for BLACK WATER now.

SPOILER ALERT*** On the first attack, when the shark blows pass them I thought that was a real shark not a composite shot or effect. And like Python I was frustrated every time Luke would look in the water to track the shark. I found myself yelling at him to SWIM FOR IT!!! Especially when he got closer to land.
