Feb 20 12 1:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have to admit it.... "Island of Lost Souls" puts me to sleep! I've tried countless times over the years(the most recent was when it was screened on TCM) but nothing. I thought the bluray release would help change my mind, but I am sure glad I didn't invest the big bucks for that one! I also have to take some No-Doze for "Night of The Living Dead", as well. And yet, I am totally on the other side of the fence with "Howard The Duck". Loved its funkness and off-beat humor ever since my first viewing. Go figure, "Ducky".

I saw it on HBO for the first time in the mid 80's. I can understand the love for it,but I've had people claim it's the greatest movie of all time. To me that's stretching it a bit. Perhaps the greatest sci-fi movie of all time. I can buy that. I'm reminded of an episode of THAT'S 70'S SHOW,where they go to see it and they all have their minds blown. I remember a scene where Eric's dad is asking something and he warns him that if he says anything related to Star Wars,he'll kick his ass. I wonder how many people were like that. I have a cousin I'm pretty sure was. I also wonder how many people actually remember seeing it. It was the 70's. Like the saying goes; if you remember the 70's,you weren't there.

Feb 22 12 11:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw STAR WARS the first day, the first screening in Dallas. I was about a month away from turning 25 years old. I remember the experience quite well, standing in line, the full house, the audience reaction to that initial flyover. I'd heard about the movie and gotten my hands on a pre-release promotional booklet with color photos. I'd read the novelization. But I didn't think the film had been ballyhooed very heavily and wasn't expecting much of a crowd that first day. In fact, my decision to see the film that day was a quite casual decision because I was out and about, had finished my errands and had the rest of the afternoon staring at me. I was very surprised to find a line waiting at the box office and a sold out house. I was lucky to get in. Anyway, I wouldn't call it the greatest science fiction film ever made. Many science fiction fans prefer to designate it as Space Opera as it's really only sci-fi in its trappings -- aliens, spaceships, ray guns -- and not especially in its content. But to see it in the movie theater back in '77 on a curved screen with surround sound was an experience and a half for someone who was 13 years old. It made a big impression and I would have stated it was the greatest movie in the world! I like to think that Star Wars brought in the special effects, and epic music of John Williams.

Feb 24 12 9:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If I was younger at the time,I think I probably would of been floored by it,and maybe would of felt differently had I seen it on the big screen. I was 17 at the time and for some reason felt no need to see it,or Empire and Jedi. I've never known why. But I like them now. They're fun movies.

I was pretty knowledgeable about special effects, and had seen some of the best effects movies that were available up to that time, such as 2001, Forbidden Planet, and Silent Running. I had read the novel, and had kept saying to myself as I read it: "they can't film that". As I watched the film onscreen, I kept saying to myself: "they DID film that". Although I favored hard science fiction I was also a fan of space opera, so I loved Star Wars for what it was. Feb 24 12 11:20 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think Them is one of the worst sci-fi movies of the 50's. Dull, overly long and with characters boring for even 1950's standards. Actually most 50's sci fi I can't stand. I like the Giant Claw because the turkey makes me laugh, and think the Deadly Mantis is actually pretty good. All the Harryhausens of that decade, great FX aside, bores me to tears. And the original Thing is so conservative as to be nearly a fascist parable. Love the 30's and 40's stuff, adore Hammer, color AIP and most 70's-80's horror but those films forget about it! And the original SW trilogy is the greatest 3 movies ever so there

Feb 25 12 5:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hah you old farts. I was 3 when I saw Star Wars. It was the first movie I ever saw in a theater, so for me it was life changing for many reasons. My parents were worried about a 3 year old acting up in the theater, it was not a problem cause the theater was full of kids having a blast. I remember parts of the film, but I also remember the experience of being in a theater for the first time. I remember being fascinated by the projection booth and the trails of light emanating from it. My mother kept yelling at me to sit still because I kept squirming in my seat looking back. To this day I think this is a large part of the reason people hate the prequels. All the hype and excitement of seeing them as a child has blown the first three out of proportion in peoples minds.

The most deeply curved were the Cinerama screens but these theaters were a special venue and, consequently, few and far between, much like Imax is today. The closest thing to Cinerama, other than the very, very few places you can still see it, are Omnimax theaters. But those screens are quite different being not only curved but domed and much larger than Cinerama.

Feb 25 12 11:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Another story I've told before. I saw STAR WARS at the first matinee the day it opened, May 25, 1977, purely by accident. My girlfriend and I were planning to go see some other movie, but she was running late as usual. While I was waiting, my Time magazine arrived in the mail. It contained a story on the year's best movie -- STAR WARS. So I convinced my g.f. we should give it a go. I don't think I'd even seen the trailer for the movie. I had tracked it through its ever-changing titles in Variety's production charts and it sounded cheesy to me. ADVENTURES OF A STARKILLER? No, thanks. There was no line for tickets, and the theatre was no more than 2//3 full for that first showing. We loved it, the audience loved it, but I had zero idea that I'd just witnessed an event. Somehow it totally sneaked up on me out of nowhere. I'm very glad that I caught the phenomenon on the first wave, but it was pure happenstance.
