Then I have changed my opinion. I have no memory of speaking so highly of the film or ever even liking it. I clearly remember the night I saw it with, and at the insistence of, my friend Sam and the impression I formed at that time. I remember being impressed at how MNS used traditional movie conventions that audiences, including myself, are usually asked to overlook to fool me (and a lot of them) throughout the film to the point that I made excuses explaining away every clue that supported the film's surprise ending. In that sense it was a sort of amusing experience, a kind of prank that worked because the victim, me, aided and abetted the prankster. I've never been tempted to see it again.

Somewhere on here it was recommended, so I found it on Netflix. Watched about 20 minutes...and turned it off due to disinterest. Watched another 20 minutes...did the same. Concluded that I had no personal interest in finishing watching, and was tryint to fulfill someone else's interest in the movie. Yuck! Never going back on this one.

Feb 14 12 4:52 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I thought that maybe circumstances caused me to intensely dislike "Alien". Went to see it on its first run, mainly due to all the hype that "summer of horror" back in '79, and sat through it in the midst of a crippling hangover. Thought I'd give it another chance in a less incapacitated condition, and found it still didn't do a thing for me. Found it boring and irritating. Because of that never bothered to see the sequels.

But one thing I'd watch it for is the whole parade of character actors, including (oddly enough) people generally known as sitcom actors - Eugene Roche, Sorrell Booke, Richard Stahl, Richard Schaal, and those are just the ones I can name right away. And for WWII movie fans, there's Karl Otto Alberty playing one more of his frightening Germans.

Feb 15 12 2:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Buckaroo Bonzai just doesn't do it for me and I really wanted to like it. Probably more of a cult film than a classic though. The Other might have made a decent chapter of a weekly anthology, but I was impatient with the film as it took too long to get to where I knew it was going.

I've just never got what's suposed to be so great about either of them. When I was a kid I couldn't see what was so great about The Black Cat(1934), but I watched it recently and was knocked out.

But at the top of my list of classics that I don't like are VERTIGO,MARNIE,ROPE and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Ironically,I'm a big fan of PSYCHO,THE BIRDS,REAR WINDOW,NORTH BY NORTHWEST and DIAL M FOR MURDER. Most Hitchcock fans I know seem to like all his stuff. He's hot and cold to me. And I really wanted to like SUSPIRIA,but just can't.

I was a huge Hitchcock fan during the '70s. VERTIGO was out-of-circulation, and had acquired an incredibly high reputation from those who remembered it (as well as those who never saw it). It even made it onto Sight & Sound's "Ten Best Films Ever Made" list. Donald Spoto devoted more print to it than any of Hitchcock's other films. So my expectations were high. When the movie was finally rereleased ('83 or '84), I went in expecting some sort of epiphany. It left me cold. I have since seen VERTIGO twenty-or so times, but I've never felt anything for the film. I don't hate it; but nor do I like it. I just don't see what's so great about it.

Strangers On A Train however I completely buy into. I thought that the script was great and the set pieces were awesome. I've never heard Marnie considered anything but minor Hitchcock and Rope is an experiment at best. Perhaps Vertigo is one of Hitchcocks more personal movies in that it deals with his blonde fixation, but one of his best? Not in my opinion.

I don't pay much attention to critics, especially when it comes to genre films, but friends were telling me that this was a decent film, assuring me that I would love it. You're right, I can't imagine how much you wanted to like HOWARD THE DUCK. in fact, I didn't even bother to try.
