Jul 23 11 3:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm not talking about AVATAR or BATTLEFIELD EARTH--I'm talking about classic films 'everybody' loves in the SF/horror/Fantasy field that you just DO NOT LIKE. I mean, come on, it's no big deal if you don't like FRIDAY THE 13th PART 5--some love it, others like it, others merely tolerate it, some loathe it, but an opinion is an opinion. But if you admit to not liking KING KONG '33, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, FORBIDDEN PLANET, I'm going to stop and think about that. Jul 23 11 6:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	OK, I was hoping I could dodge being first, coward that I am, but I'll start with one of the Universal classics: THE INVISIBLE MAN I was so bored by this one. I've never understood the interest in the character--his 'power' is that you can't see him. Big deal. It's not scary, the comedy is campy (I know ,that's the point...), and it's a chore to sit through. I've seen people rave about this and I just don't see the appeal. Jul 23 11 8:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This film is considered a minor classic, a lot of cheers. Night Of The Living Dead, simplistic mish/mash of zombie(I guess) mayhem. Romero placed with the Carpenters, Barkers ect., as a modern pioneer of the indie horror business. I am not fond of films that display guts and blood, artistic expression be damned. I suggest that HG Wells probably isn't your bag, The Invisible Man brings the authors spirit to the film, add James Whale, a humorous script, oh well. Does "classic" mean it has to be high-budget or generally highly regarded or Academy-awarded, or all of the above? Without knowing the answer to that question, I am going to throw out my first (that is only one of several that may qualify: THE MAN FROM PLANET X So creaky, so retrograde-looking (a movie that looks like it was made in the 30s, not the 50s), with a rococo spaceship that looks like the base of a candelabra. I won't even talk about the "spaceman" (urgh). I had absolutely no patience for it when I saw it on TV as a teen. "Men, there's a drive-in movie full of juicy people! Wow! " - PIC Mosquito Coil Ad

Jul 23 11 10:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	First, I just wanted to react to THE INVISIBLE MAN -- it's interesting that you say you didn't find it scary, Jonatwork, because in recent years I had been considering just the opposite ... for me, that is ... that this character just may be one of the scariest! The reason for my thoughts is that it can be terrifying if I really would have an invisible maniac stalking me or something. How would I get away from him? He'd always be one jump ahead of me ... and how would I know if he was sitting right there watching me, wherever I went? I saw FORBIDDEN PLANET mentioned, and that's one which leaps out at me... I only tried it once, but I found it intolerable and boring, mainly an FX show with "look at this, look at that", and not much more. By the way -- since you're newer around here, Jon, (and any others too) I'd like to call your attention to some "Overrated/Underrated" threads I made here once upon a time. Jul 23 11 2:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Said it before and I'll say it again: THE SHINING. Found it creepy when I was very young but the older I got and the more I saw of Kubricks other work,the less and less I like it. I don't like non genre fans telling me its the scariest film ever,I've never owned it in any format and I even once gave it the old college try in a theater on Halloween and I fell asleep 40 minutes in and woke up during the credits. Something about the film simply does not connect with me and possibly never will. I have also found DRACULA in any of his incarnations to be something that never interested me. I can say with no hint of irony that the films I own with Dracula in the title involve Santo or Al Adamson.

The only answers I can think of are ... (1) KING KONG. I love this movie, but I often feel maybe I don't love it as much as I should, and certainly not as much as many do. I know a lotta folks think it's the greatest thing ever, but it sure wouldn't make my Top 10, maybe not my top 25. Still, I like it a lot. (2) THE RAVEN (1935) I enjoy the movie, but it's definitely in a guilty pleasure sort of way, 'cause I think, all-in-all, it's a very silly, laughable movie. Karloff is lousy and Lugosi is worse. I don't think most folk really consider this a "classic", but if you do, then consider it my answer to this question.

So far, I've liked every one of 'em, and agreed with none of 'em! Joe Karlosi, Kew,l I will check those out. I'm asking a slightly different question, but for some reason I find over/underrated to be slightly off from what I'm asking here. To me, when someone's saying something is overrated they're saying they didn't like it and don't like that other people do. Here, I'm just asking, "Which classic did you hate?" I find this question interesting because it says something about a genre fan base's sacred cows. However, "I just can't understand what the (fudge) is so classic about them" is how I'd define: The Shining 2001: A Space Odyssey Keep listing them, folks. Someone is bound to remind me of another movie that puts my ass into a coma.

I find it hard to discern just how much I like KING KONG as I have a difficult time divorcing it from the huge role it played in my childhood,watching it at my grandmothers during the holidays and seeing a print of it at my local library during a summertime kids program they were running. STAR WARS was a mammoth part of my youth also but its legacy has definitely tainted my current view of it and its not quite as magical as it once was.

Your answer--FORBIDDEN PLANET--is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I can understand someone finding 2001 or SOLARIS boring even though I loved them, but FORBIDDEN PLANET being one someone dislikes makes me stop and go "HUH?!?!" Many of these movies we saw in our youth, but I only saw fragments of this when I was a kid. I didn't see it complete until I was an adult, and I loved it, and still think it captures a truly alien atmosphere. If it had been a hit, I think, we'd have seen big budget SF become a mainstream staple back in the fifties, instead of it being something that had a reliable but limited audience. “The more elaborate our means of communication, the less we communicate.” Joseph Priestley

I actually come and go on 2001--I've actually been called a phony for saying I didn't like it anymore, though I used to--and now I seem to be swinging back toward liking it again...but I dunno. What do you mean when you call it 'self-important'? For me, there is a line between self-important and ambitious, and I like ambitious movies, and think this is one of them. Another thread reminded me of these two--can't believe I'd forgotten... JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING I don't think I've TRIED to like a movie as much as I've tried to like this one. I keep giving it another chance based on people' praise. I've now seen it, I think, three times, and it's just a dreary, unscary bore. To take two of the movies named above, Blade Runner and The Shining seemed to me obviously bad when they came out, and a lot of reviewers thought the same. No positive description of either that I've read has addressed their badness and shown it to be anything different. And, bad or good, I'd never call either a classic anything. I'm not sure the word has any meaning, anyway, when applied to horror movies. There are no horror movies analogous to classic Greek and Latin literature. Universal's horror movies were called classics in the 50s, when they showed up on tv, just because they were old; and some of them weren't even that. Maybe "classic" in the movie sense means something is before the time of the kids who are watching it and a publicist or fan calls it classic one time. Point Pleasant was classic Aaron Spelling horror!

Just FYI, no biggie, but I used that as kind of a joke, like you're under the third degree, and you finally break and say, "All right, all right! I didn't like BEACHES! You've got the truth now, copper!" And then you're supposed to break down crying. :P I have a friend who's a classics professor, but...c'mon, you KNOW what people mean when they say 'classic' don't ya? Come on? ADMIT IT!!!! THE SHINING seems to be a popular/not popular choice along with 2001. Alien. there, i said it. saw it as a 9 year old when it came out and was bored. thought the monster was cool, but just wished he would eat the lady running around and making noise so i could go home. my opinion was very much in the minority among my peers. i've tried on multiple occasions since to sit down and make myself appreciate it, without any luck. the monster is still cool though. i place it right there with 2001 on the tedium scale.
