Like many others did when they heard this news, I feel like I just lost a family member. As host of TV Ontario's Saturday Night at the Movies, Yost introduced hundreds, probably thousands of young ones such as myself to classic cinema, long before AMC or TCM did so, and his loveable, genial personality was part of the experience. As if that weren't enough, he conducted hundreds of invaluable televised interviews with the people behind the movies, not just actors and directors but set designers, costumers, and yes, special effects people as well. Not as well known is that he was also active in Canadian science fiction fandom and even wrote some works himself, a fact revealed by science fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer when he made an appearance on the show. Some of the highlights of the show of interest to fans were a trip to the Ackermansion guided by Forry himself (some of this footage turns up in the documentary Famous Monster) and George Pal's very last televised interview. Today, SNAM is a pale shadow of its old self, showing mostly mediocre contemporary films and insipid interviews and commentary, but Elwy's enthusiasm and genuine love for cinema will live on through those who grew up with him and his show.
