Like the thread I posted on Romanian genre movies last year, this
blog-like post is intended to cast light on fantasy, horror and sci-fi
features from another overlooked-yet-significant film market, namely:
Arabic-language cinema. Throughout the period I want to look at, from
1940 to 2000, this market was dominated by Egyptian films, accounting
for upwards of 90% of productions, although Lebanon and Syria also
fostered less substantial movie industries during the 1960s, 1970s, and
1980s.
While Mexican, Philippino, Indian, Turkish and Indonesian genre movies have all received considerable attention in recent decades, Arabic-language films are entirely absent from works such as The Overlook Film Encyclopedias or even Mondo Macabro, and this really is a shame, since there are some truly wild and psychotronic gems to be discovered.
Like the output of the other nations just mentioned, Arabic-language films can often be derivative of Hollywood hits; indeed, the only Egyptian movie regularly mentioned on this board is the remake of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948), HARAM ALIK (1953, a.k.a. SHAME ON YOU, but referred to more commonly in recent years as ISMAIL AND ABDEL MEET FRANKENSTEIN). While this movie is by no means a poor representative of Egyptian or Arabic-language genre cinema, there is still so much more out there that is worth seeing, and little of it quite so derivative as HARAM ALIK.
What follows is an image-heavy overview of a dozen subgenres of movies within the fantasy, horror and sci-fi field; it's by no means a comprehensive list, although I've tried to cover all the major bases in it. My hope is that this thread (or at least its many pictures!) might intrigue a few of the other completists hereabouts to explore some of these overlooked wonders, and wherever a dvd with English subtitles is readily available from reputable sites such as fineartfilm.com, I've noted this in the text.
'Not just ISMAIL AND ABDEL' - poster designs for HARAM ALIK (1953):
