May 13 06 7:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I come to this thread to say....I think Argento's "Inferno" is one of the most beautifully filmed horror flick hands down!...even if it makes little sense.......just totally in another world....Like getting smacked in the back of the head with a shovel,while watching a "Fellini" flick on acid! Ladies & gents I stand my ground on these words.Wait a minute...I can't feel my legs,I can't feel my LLLEEEGGGGSS!!!!!!

May 14 06 3:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I feel like I shouldn't like this movie as much as I do. It's very lazily (almost non-existantly) plotted, has probably the least effective lead character in any Argento film, and I feel that the witch is not only far too easily dispatched but really not all that concerned with concealing her identity. Still, I don't think any movie as closely approximates the feel of a dream as much as this one does. It's full of weird settings that never feel real, there's a sense of spatial dislocation (as if the borders of rooms and places are constantly giving way to darker spaces), characters pop up and die without ever having real effect, and the whole narrative just seems to glide on the logic of a nightmare. It all fails if you try to apply any sort of conventional sense to it, but if you just surrender to the madness, in its own way it has to be considered a triumph over reality. The appearance of the second witch in the classroom is gorgeous and disorienting. The library sequence makes no sense at all-- what sort of library has a medieval dungeon complete with a cauldron?-- but it just works. Then there's quite possibly the most insane moment of all: the cruel antique dealer being devoured by the rats. The hotdog vendor (!) apparently comes to his aid only to kill him apropos of nothing. If style can completely win out over substance and still be compelling, then this is that case. *The moon, the moonlight/ Casts no shadow for me to hide/ The stars, or maybe they're satellites/ But neither can grant my wish tonight*

May 15 06 1:10 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It may be my favortie Argento movie. I was bothered by the flaws the first time. since then I'v seen it a three more times and it gets better every time. The flaws seems surreal. The movie is a genuine work of poetry on film. Its good stuff.

It's a perfect example of something making no meaningful sense but in terms of dream logic working beautifully. I wish that Irene Miracle could've been the lead player because she fares better than Leigh McCloskey. It's hard to blame him, though-- his character is so one-dimensional and basically only escapes the witch because of the fire. All I know is, everytime I walk past the ritzy Dakota building in New York's midtown (the building in the film seems modeled on it), I always think of the dread Mother of Darkness living within. *The moon, the moonlight/ Casts no shadow for me to hide/ The stars, or maybe they're satellites/ But neither can grant my wish tonight*

May 15 06 9:11 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I agree that though this film makes little sense, it is one of Argento's most visual appealing films. It takes the visual feel of Suspiria and cranks it up to 11. I just hope that when and if he ever finishes his "trilogy" of witch films he continues to carry over the surreal feel of Inferno and Suspiria.

On repeated viewing, I found INFERNO a little dull I guess, near the bottom in my Argento ranking. The murder setpieces are well done, but the film is much too long and slow, and the stylistic flourishes overwhelm it at times. Bavaesque lighting is often effective, but here it's distracting. Of Argento, I much prefer CAT O' NINE TAILS and PHENOMENA. -------------- "Say, this is obscene!"

According to Horror Central news of May 10th......Argento is on his way back to Italy to start filming the final act of the trilogy.Working with a script by Adam Gierach & Jace Anderson(Toolbox Murders)...sounds like he's got a decent budget and a renewed veracity toward the project...keep your fingers crossed!

The rumor that he did has been spreading around for a while. I believe there was a thread about that over on Mobius a while back. Bava designed a lot of the glass mattes that helped fake NYC, along with that PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES air duct in the basement and some of those great stage magic illusions at the climax. I hope they do more in-camera old school tricks like that for the third film. I love INFERNO in spite of its ridiculous qualities. In many ways, it's the perfect Argento film: endless great cinematic sequences without any feeble attempts at plot or character getting in the way!

Bava's involvement was limited to trick shots, maquettes, matte paintings, and a very small amount of second unit shooting associated with the special effects.

I find that the majority of the time, surreal is just a "cover" for stupid and nonsensical. One of my least favorite Argento's.
