Jun 23 09 7:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just saw this 1959 film for the first time ever (thanks to a kind board member who sent me a very good dvd-r copy) and I thought it was great. The special effects were cool, especially in the beginning in the temple. Some obvious miniatures here and there, but no worse than a ton of other 50's sci-fi flicks! I thought the car crash/explosion off the cliff was excellent, as were the gruesome flesh-eating effects. Long Live CALTIKI! When NoShame Italy released this on Region 2 DVD, it was aquired thru an Italian rights owner. Warners does have 35mm elements for the English dub created by Allied Artists; according to Tim Lucas in his Mario Bava book, TCM showed the English version and it was supplied by Warners. And as far as I know, both the Italian and English versions both run the same length.

And as I can recall, the American version did keep the gruesome stuff in; subsequent releases and TV prints usually edited those scenes out.

Jun 24 09 11:20 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This was always one of my favorite horror movies, and it was shown quite frequently on TV in the 1960s. As I recall, it was shown with most of the gruesome stuff left in, which was one reason why it was so popular with us kids - this movie really delivered the goods. I have the R2 dvd and I don't see anything remarkably different as far as gore content - the skull-faced skindiver, the guy whose arm gets caught in Caltiki, and who eventually falls in, it was all on TV. BTW, the R2 disk is well worth getting, although the extras are pretty useless if you don't speak Italian.

Reminded me, in a way, of Argento's INFERNO. And if you colorized the scene where they peel the goo off the guy's arm, you could probably drop it right into one of the SAW movies. I'd definitely want more confirmation than that, though, as it could be some fan's wishful thinking. I could definitely could see somebody in the Italian film business thinking back to Caltiki for inspiration when designing the sequence for INFERNO. Tim Lucas on another thread comfirms Bava did indeed work on some effects of INFERNO. Although it was not the underwater sequence. Bava worked on some miniatures of the New York Skyline in the film. I just got around to putting it in the player and when it booted up, SURPRISE!!! the root menu for From Hell IT Came appears. I open the player drawer, a bit confused, and there is a DVD-R with Caltiki the Immortal Monster labeled clearly. Hum, is it possible both movies are on it, nope, just a missed labeled DVD-r from Resurrection Video. And I already have four copies of FHIC. Anyone want to trade? Pint of bitter, please.
