When i was a kid,i recall hearing "LEGEND OF WOOLEY SWAMP" on the radio on a late night trip and it definitely conjured up some creepy imagery,in particular the following verses that let a 7 year old kids imagination go ballistic. The "make a strong man die of fright" line was the real kicker.

Well, if you ever go back into Wooley Swamp,
Well, you better not go at night.
There's things out there in the middle of them woods
That make a strong man die from fright.

This section was also pretty unsettling to me then,it was probably one of the first times i had ever heard of the notion of people deriving some sort of perverse pleasure from harming/killing another person and the bit about the black water sucking him down isn't much more reassuring.

And they all went crazy
And they beat the old man,
And they picked him up off of the ground.
Threw him in the swamp
And stood there and laughed
As the black water sucked him down.

I've always loved any sort of song/film/story that has the capper where you can go to that cursed spot even today (if you dare!) and see the evidence for yourself. The song always was pretty bizarre to me as a kid because it laid out the old man as an unlikable greedy miser and then introduces his murderers as belligerent white trash. Not a single likable or identifiable soul in the entire tale,which is what makes it interesting. I always felt bad for the young men being trapped forever in the mire but then again,they beat an elderly man to death for his money! What was it with the 70's where people seemed to love to bring up images of swampy marshland??
