Not that there was a very good case against any of them: the so-called piracy was basically a print or two here and there of some copyrighted films, along with trafficking in much older obscure and often PD movies.

The guy owned some prints none of them seem to be particularly rare and copied some of them to VHS and sold them. This was back in the days before everything was released for home video so if you wanted to own a movie you were pretty much a pirate in those days. http://www.thesmokinggun....mcdowalls-planet-tapes-0 Like someone else pointed out he couldn't even get his hands on good copies of his own films.

Dec 17 11 6:07 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	What Roddy McDowall made wasn't substantially different from what Henri Langlois and Georges Franju made in the early years of the Cinémathèque Française. Langlois even kept movie prints in his bathroom... Yes - it was "illegal", and so what? so many laws are made by and for idiots. We can be grateful to these people, if so many movies were preserved and now available. The movie companies just destroyed a large part of our filmic heritage. Dec 17 11 6:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	How true, but I recall reading comments about Langlois decades ago that painted him as a sort of thief. In the mid-to-late '70s, in the film collector publications, a 'dupe' print was often looked down at as second-class (or worse) but I bought a Night Of The Living Dead 16mm dupe print back then, a new print, which apparently had no copyright attached. And the quality was fine. The person I bought it from specialized in PD items, but others did not follow that course. Some people were openly duping older material to save it and occasionally sell it to a very tiny market, which is a great service and (in that context) arguably different from those pirating commercial DVDs today, which are products which often have no rarity involved. In many cases, if people had not duplicated these films, they might not be there to enjoy today, or only in more degraded condition.

Yes - as Robin Hood was probably considered as a sort of thief by the sheriff of Nottingham centuries ago! Seriously, I can't stand movie collectors who kept a movie for themselves, hidden in a secret vault. Langlois's purpose was quite different. And by now, the Cinémathèque Française is an institution, and Langlois's name is given to streets in many French towns. Yes - just like De Gaulle.

Dec 21 11 2:25 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Langlois is a real hero of mine. Anyone who calls themselves a "film buff" must see HENRI LANGLOIS: THE PHANTOM OF THE CINEMATHEQUE. It was aired on TCM a few years back and it made me realize how important he is to cinema. Even how important he is to our own DVD collections. I wonder if our own todmichel had been at any of his screenings?

Every star didn't qualify. There is no proof that Chaney ever had prints of any of his films. And, since Lon's "estate" has now been passed down through three generations, I'm sure that his living heirs would know if they were sitting on a print of LAM. They know it's lost.

The unrelenting tale of studio indifference and apathy----of lost treasures so tantalizingly attainable-----makes for compelling reading, and I hope that Mr Terror strikes the jackpot regarding his global sweep of archive-houses and dusky cellars, in his bid to reveal the riches contained within the Chaney 'Holy Grail'. His admirable stance to relocate the precious film-spools------which were so tantalizingly within his grasp, if only fleetingly------to their 'location of safety' must have been truly heart-wrenchening for him, and many lesser archivists would have fled the scene with the pilfered booty. I t must have been galling and utterly crushing for Mr Terror when he later discovered that studio blundering had thrown up yet another frustrating smoke-screen, with the prize relocated to a destination unknown. Mr Terror, if you are reading these words, I wish you every success in making this stellar celluloid work available to the wider community of Horror-Fantasy enthusiasts. The sprawling epic od 70-odd cyberpages on this subject was mostly all written before I arrived on this site, and I had no idea such controversy had been inflamed by Sid's actions [I observe he is noticably absent from the board these days]. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Bobtheman: the entire saga was entirely unknown to me until last night/tonite, it was well worth a read if the entire data was a bit too much for my fevered brow to take in---but I get the basic gist.
