Considering the history of the Chaney's silent Phantom Of The Opera, I don't mind that somebody is re-imagining it. The actual film as it exists today is nowhere near the original filmmakers intent - the print currently available on consumer DVDs is missing footage and is FAR removed from what had been shown in theaters in 1925. This new version sounds like they're actually trying to make it closer in spirit to Gaston Leroux's original novel and closer to the way the film was seen way back when (regardless of the 3D). And from what I read, it sounds like Universal released a 'talkie' re-vision of the silent version back in 1930 (which is now also lost). If anything, this version will be the closest we will ever see to that version. I commend them for doing this with the Phantom and making it accessible for viewers today.

It was horrible that they did it< Well... it was an odd "re-do," but: - It was done by the studio that made & owned the original - Just a few years after that original - On some of the same sets, with some of the same cast, etc. - In an era when many owners of classic Silents were trying things like this - Griffith recut, rescored, and retinted BIRTH OF A NATION; Hughes dubbed/reshot the nearly complete HELL'S ANGELS into a sorta-Talkie; Chaplin rejiggered & narrated THE GOLD RUSH for sound, etc. So, while clumsy, those projects were still a far shot away from what this project is!

If it had been presented as "hey guys we worked on a fan edited of Phantom want a DVD of it," instead we go a over the top press release and what appears to be a fake interview. There are a bunch of fan edits out there of various movies and I love them because they are presented as fan edits and usually given away for free.

The old version of PHANTOM is still always going to be available whatever happens, right? And probably from many, many, many different video companies just like it's always been. It's not going anywhere. If someone accepts Colorization and qualifies it with "as long as the old version is always available", there is no difference here, whatever butchering is done to this film. I am not in favor of this particular release either, but I'm just seeing the areas of gray here. I do tend to go back and forth about Colorization and have gotten to the point where I've accepted it a bit since the originals are always going to be available, so I suppose it's only fair that I extend the same logic here. It is not being presented as a loving fan-tribute mashup; it is being rolled out as, in some ways, the best home vid release of the film ever.

I suppose I'm not the only one over the years to think it would be interesting to try to do a lip-sync version, but that's deceptively simple and pretty doomed. In silent movies, interstitial title cards not only interpreted the dialogue on screen, they frequently supplanted it. A long (or even short) speech would be replaced with the printed title after a few establishing frames, at which point you cut back to the last second or so of lip-flap. That means the bulk of the speech you're going to dub isn't there. There may be less of that in PHANTOM than other more lip-flap verbose films, but it is a problem. What to do? Cut away to something else to extend the sequence? Optically repeat a shot and slow it down to add more footage to match the dialogue? Therein lies weirdness, like the re-do of JACK THE GIANT KILLER with ex post facto songs. Like I said, this would be interesting to watch once. And clearly, since they've put all this time and money into it, they're looking for a broad market which would not otherwise buy a vintage old silent movie, not just us ancient fanboys, hence the tone of the hype.

And though the print is not as good, it's a genuinely different - and I feel, better - movie. >That means the bulk of the speech you're going to dub isn't there.< Yep - bit of a problem. As are the many little jump cuts created when you yank the cards out of the middle of the dialogue sequences. Yes, it will be interesting as an experiment: how far did they go? Are there fully developed SFX and Ambience tracks for all the scenes, etc.?
