Contentedly watched the CasaNegra DVD for the first time the other day, after not seeing the U.S. version in over 20 years. Apart from the value of being able to hear the actual performances (sorry duberoos) -- though Gaston Santos is pretty lifeless himself -- what is really striking about it is the acid irony of Obon's screenplay & the absolute sobriety with which Mendez handled it, decidedly less sensational & commercial than than the Abel Salazar stable that rounds out CasaNegra's other releases. (In a way it's not hard to fantasize about what saved it from getting carried off on the K. Gordon Murray circuit like the others.)Just so, I regret the melodramatic climax. It's quite acceptable, & haunting, that after Dr Masali returns to earth he emerges not only mad but unable to describe what he's seen. Still, I hoped for something a little more cosmic than just a monster chasing after the girl, touching though it is. Maybe he would have tried to contrive a way to pull Patricia back into the other world with him, something like that? At least Carlos Ancira's performance as Elmer is excellent. For my money, the scene in which the sound of Dr Masali's violin leads to his discovery in the adjacent room is wonderful -- for me, a small, classic moment in the history of horror movies hitherto little-known to U.S. fans.
