I don't subscribe to the damn thing, but it just showed up and I can't get rid of it, and it won't let me do anything. McAfee & Superantispyware both say everything's jake. But it keeps blocking programs. It's like The Body Snatcher -- it won't go away. Anybody have any ideas? Please?

Jun 13 11 11:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Don't know for sure, Hal, but it sounds depressingly like what happened to me about 2 1/2 years ago. I eventually had to take the computer to somebody who knew what he was doing and have it...scrubbed. Or something. It cost me too much money, but it did fix the problem. I hope your problem is something simpler. And cheaper.

I'm just galled that this appears to be a legitimate site, but I'm being held hostage to the tune of 60 bucks! And who knows if even that will do it?

If that fails download Kaspersky rescue disk, burn it to CD and boot from that CD: http://www.softpedia.com/...persky-Rescue-Disk.shtml I can pretty much 100% guaranty that kaspersky rescue disk will take care of it.

Jun 14 11 7:16 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for the suggestion, Rider. The malewarebytes looks like it costs money, the Kaspersky looks free. Meanwhile, I managed to get an email off to XP HOME SECURITY 2012. This morning I found a way to access my mail (via Safari) and found a response that apologized for the trouble, explained it was a vendor who has been banned, and says it will go away after 6 days. He says I can advance my clock 6 days, but of course that's one of the functions the popups won't allow me to access (!). I may see if I can hold out six days and proceed accordingly. Wish I could manipulate the clock. Yeesh. Thanks again, guys!

Jun 14 11 8:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I got this just also just a month ago or so, and ended up having to buy "Stopzilla" spyware removal for $39.95 (I'm supposed to get a $30 rebate, which would make it $9.95). It did work, so that's an option for ya'. "XP HOME SECURITY 2012" of course is a total scam. It's asking for money, no? Needless to say, do not give them any!

Jun 14 11 10:53 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes, Malwarebytes is free and I recommend it highly. I'd say it works 85-90% of the time for me with nuisance malware. Some viruses will block you from activating various programs, including MWB. If you start the computer in Safe Mode, you can often get around this. Another thing I do is carry MWB with me on a flashdrive. If you can't access it on the hard drive, that will sometimes work. This is not just for Hal but for anyone. ANY "antivirus" program that tells you you're infected and invites you to send money for a cleaning is a scam, PERIOD. No exceptions. Particularly if you don't recall installing the program to begin with. Just like anyone who tells you you've won money in a contest you didn't enter, but you have to send them some kind of payment first, is always a scam. NO honest anti-virus company does business in this way. EDIT: Also, if you have Malwarebytes, update it regularly whether you've used it or not. If months go by and your system gets hijacked, you may have trouble updating it at that point and it may not have all the tools it needs for your infection. This is true of any anti-virus, actually. Jun 14 11 11:38 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This sounds like a virus that attacked the computers here at work last month - are you getting pop ups every time you try to open a web browser (like Internet Explorer or Firefox) that say the sites aren't safe and you need to update your security? It infested a coworkers computer so bad they just reimaged it rather than try to repair it.

Unfortunately customers freak out and just go to someone else when I tell them that so I have to "remove" the virus and explain them there is no guaranty on virus removal. I also laugh when I offer them a custom security package for $20 and they turn me down. If anyone on here ever needs my help I can sometimes remote into your PC and help but with a virus it's hit or miss since they sometimes lock down the whole system.

This morning I turned on the computer to find that McAfee had removed the trojan ~~ no more XP HOME SECURITY bug on my toolbar, no more pop ups ..... .....but still no response to those programs I was trying to access ("access denied") ~~ Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, even my own control panel. Yeesh! Only reason I'm here now is that I found a way to sneak back onto the Internet through Microsoft Updates, so fingers crossed I can continue to do this. But yow, now I've got to figure out why no access to ordinary everyday programs (the same ones the trojan pop ups weren't letting me open, I think). Life is never simple.

But some other programs such as AdAware and SpyBot can coexist with an antivirus program. What's the story on Malwarebytes? Can it peacefully coexist with Avast or AVG, or should it be on a machine by itself?
