Jun 4 11 2:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Could not find a thread on this specific movie...here goes... I just caught this for the first time in years on TCM the other day. I remember if fondly mainly because of the cool looking aliens and the "hated" Godzilla dance on Planet X. My recording skipped right through the battle on Planet X and I missed the big G dancing. But, having said that, I still like the aliens and the hot girlfriend of Nick Adams. What I did not remember though is how little the monsters appear in this movie!! I kept waiting, kept waiting, etc. When they do - stock footage. The print was kind of bad too. Can anyone shed any light on what might be different with the Japanese version - INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER? I don't know why but I still like those gray and black alien duds.... "I saw what I saw when I saw it!"

The first line was during a quick conversation with one of the (off-screen) personnel at the Hydrogen-Oxide plant. The second line is spoken after Astronauts Glenn and Fuji leave Planet X; in the American version, this was dubbed over with an evil laugh. The third occasion is after the skirmish between Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah on Planet X; when the Controller notices that Glenn and Fuji are missing from the control room, he stands, presses buttons on the control panel and issues orders in his own language. Cut or trimmed shots: An overhead shot of Japanese troops running across a stream as the X-ite Saucers land at Lake Myojin. A ground-level shot of the Saucers transporting Godzilla and Rodan away from Earth. A line of Nick Adams' dialogue on the Saucer. The X-ites lose track of Glenn and Fuji at an elevator, the scene continues with one of the X-ites turning and issuing commands to the others. A shot of a document coversheet in Japanese when Dr. Sakurai retrieves the plans for the A-Cycle Light Ray from a filing cabinet. Additional changes included the deletion of newspaper headlines and office signs in Japanese characters. Alternatively, English translations for newspaper headlines announcing the threat of Planet X were inserted. Some of the sound effects were also re-mixed, notably during the infamous "Godzilla Jig" after King Ghidorah's first defeat on Planet X. In the Japanese version, we only hear Godzilla's roar, while the Americanization added a thump each time Godzilla lands on the ground. There were also numerous musical alternations to the US version. Jun 5 11 3:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There are two music alterations to the US version from memory, both of which actually improve on the Japanese version. 1) Instead of the upbeat martial march, the US title sequence uses the eerie music heard when Godzilla is risen from the lake. 2) The martial march is edited around during the final assault sequence, but actually sounds more dynamic consequently.

Jun 5 11 6:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Still one of my favorite of the classic 60s Honda/Tsuburaya Godzilla sequels, if not my favorite Honda/Tsuburaya Godzilla film after the original, it's kind of a tie-up between this and Mothra. The Xilians are the most iconic of the Toho aliens for sure and while it is short of monster screen time it has some of the most compelling human characters and lots of build-up, so when the monsters do show up it feels satisfying. Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster on the other hand feels kind of uninteresting outside the (more prominent) monster footage. Monster Zero also has a wonderful, pulpy "pure sci-fi" feel, it nicely meshes the feel of Honda's and Tsuburaya's earlier kaiju films with their space movies like Mysterians and Battle in Outer Space. I saw the movie in 35mm a month or so ago and the main reason the stock footage doesn't look as good is because it's mostly from Rodan which was shot in full frame Academy ratio and had to be cropped to fit the 2.35:1 ratio of Tohoscope, so it looks grainy. And if anything the US version is just as good as the Japanese if not better. The dubbing is pretty tolerable, Adam speaks his real English lines, the hated-Godzilla shie is improved with the thundering sound, the music tweaks are largely better, etc. And just about everything that was cut is just to tighten the film up and should have been edited out by Toho anyways. jlcarrozza.com Last Edited By: Uchujin65 Jun 5 11 7:41 PM. Bob Eggleton commented on it elsewhere, and mentioned that it looked pretty decent except for the first few minutes, which were rather scratchy. I'm sure that those that were actually there will be able to elaborate.

They were somewhat color faded old grindhouse-style prints but it very much added to the ambiance and the films looked beautiful. jlcarrozza.com

I don't know why, but I thought of First Men In the Moon and Earth vs. The Flying Saucers when I watched this baby again on TCM. I'm speaking of the Planet X exterior stuff and the saucers specifically. So, on set, did everyone just speak Japanese while Nick threw down his lines in English? I also must agree with Drac, Nick Adam's girl was uber-hot, I'd forgotten her.

Jun 15 11 12:11 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	First off, I love Godzilla VS Monster Zero, it's easily in my top 5. But there's something that's been bugging me and that is the spaceship P-1. There's Glenn & Fuji sitting in what looks like a cramped Gemini capsule atop the rocket with no visible door behind them to exit and enter the rest of the ship. Tsubaraya & Co. usually are very good at producing some great spaceships and interiors, i.e. Battle In Outer Space & Gorath. Yet how did the two astronauts leave the cabin & enter the airlock?? Very puzzling.
