Having just seen it last night i am both happy as a film fan but underwhelmed.
It looks good, is creative, pays all the right homages to the silent film era........ but!.........
The story is sooooooo slitght, predictable and safe. Personally i
found it dull. Having seen Singing in the Rain, A star is born etc
etc i knew exactly what was coming all the time.
See here is my problem. The camera movements and style betray the
limitations of the film industry of the time but thats ok as its being
presented as real life by transferring the silent standards of the film
era onto the 'real life' world of the characters.... fine. but
then they make the actual world of the characters glossy and superficial
like in the films they are making. No anger, no abuse, no drugs etc
etc........... its just all too safe. So any decent film fan knew
EXACTLY what was going to happen all through the film right to the end
by about the 5th minute of the movie.
