Capitol Silent Movie Series Presents Lon Chaney in The Hunchback of Notre Dame
1923 Classic to be presented with live theater organ accompaniment

Rome’s Capitol Theatre (220 W. Dominick St.) will present the 1923 movie, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” as part of their ongoing Silent Movie Series on Saturday, May 14 at 7 pm. When released in 1923, the movie made a major star of actor Lon Chaney, whose innovative makeup in the title role remains astonishing to this day.

Set in Set in 15th-century Paris, the story concerns a beautiful gypsy girl, Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller), who is imprisoned after having been convicted of a crime she did not commit. When the hunchbacked bell ringer of the cathedral rescues the girl, he becomes her protector against the rising tide of political intrigue set in motion by the evil conspirator, Jehen (Brandon Hurst). Also starring in the Wallace Worsley-directed epic are Norman Kerry, Ernest Torrence, and Tully Marshall. Universal Studios biggest production to date, boasting a remarkably faithful reproduction of Notre Dame, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” was one of the top money-makers of the entire silent era.

Renowned silent film musician Avery Tunningley will accompany the “Hunchback of Notre Dame” live on the Capitol Theatre’s 1928 Moller theater organ. The film will be shown via a 35mm print on the theater’s 20-ft. high screen. The program is expected to run approx. 2 hours.
