May 11 11 2:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	So....I have to admit I have been digging some of the episodes of Night Gallery on DVD. "The Caterpillar" was a really good one in particular.... I was wondering, what are some of the other favorite episodes out there? Did anyone else notice the Crowley Tarot cards in the Vincent Price episode with Bill Bixby? Seems like the occult was a major theme with a lot of the shows. I guess satanic stuff was really hip in the late sixties/early seventies. No wonder Lavey cashed in!!

The second has a few OK episodes that I recall fondly, but I am reluctantly forced to admit that the only really scary thing about this show was the opening credits sequence. Most of these DO NOT hold up. I liked "The Caterpillar" and in a very different vein, "Silent Snow, Secret Snow." Others I enjoyed were "The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes" (the ending of that one still is effective), "Cool Air," "Pickman's Model," "Sins of the Father," and the one with Artie Johnson as a doomed DJ. Much like Twilight Zone, these were stories of karma--someone does something bad, and bad is then visited on them. But I don't think TV executives or producers wanted to make anything really scary. There are moments and images, some music, some performances, but Night Gallery was a real bummer when I saw it again. Sep 10 11 1:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes I just saw this episode the other day. A local afflliate in Dallas is showing NIGHT GALLERY Season 3 at 10:30pm Monday thru Friday. So, I started recording them. Haven't seen these in YEARS! Don't like the opening them for Season 3 - prefer Gil from Season 1 and 2. So far these episodes seem really dated to me. Not very good. Haven't seen my favorites yet because they are from the first 2 seasons. Also, THE TWILIGHT ZONE plays much better in repeats than GALLERY I think. ZONE is just so much better. But having said that I am giving these a look since it's been so long. Oh...just saw JONATWORK's comment. "Best left in memory." I think that might be right. The ones I would like to see again are: PICKMAN'S MODEL, THE DEVIL IS NOT MOCKED, GREEN FINGERS, BIG SURPRISE, THE PAINTED MIRROR, and THE BOY WHO PREDICTED EARTHQUAKES. For some reason these are the only ones that jump to mind. "I saw what I saw when I saw it!"

Slowly, I came to the reluctant acceptance that this was no Twilight Zone; by the third season, I had drifted away. Still, I agree it had it's solid moments, which for me would have to include these episodes: The Dead Man - Carl Betz, Jeff Corey, Louise Sorel They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar - William Windom, Diane Baker Marmalade Wine - Robert Morse, Rudy Vallee Silent Snow, Secret Snow - Welles' voice, Conrad Aiken story Cool Air - Henry Darrow, Barbara Rush The Caterpillar - Laurence Harvey I would say this line-up is composed of pure EC (The Dead Man; The Caterpillar; Marmalade Wine), pure HP (Cool Air) and pure TZ at it's most wistful (Silent Snow; Tim Riley's Bar). At the time, I especially disliked the humorous blackouts or short shorts, which for me diluted the atmosphere I was watching the show for in the first place.

People seem to get disappointed when they find that Rod Serling didn't have more control of the show, and feel that takes the show down a notch or two. NG had a lot of talented people involved in it, and they turned out some great shows. At least, it gets a raking over the coals from the Night Gallery guidebook (a book I generally LIKE). Everything seems to get criticized, from Sandra Dee's acting to overdone futuristic stuff (I've seen it at least once since reading that, and the futuristic stuff is actually kept very low-key.)

When I talk about things that scared me as a kid, NIGHT GALLERY always comes up. I don't really remember any particular episodes, just that the show frightened me. Now, at 46, I'm rediscovering the show and while I hate to admit it, Jonatwork is right. When I take off the rose colored glasses of my youth, I find the show is really hit and miss. Strangenstein

In my opinion, NIGHT GALLERY had a higher batting average than THRILLER and ONE STEP BEYOND, and not greatly lower than THE TWILIGHT ZONE and THE OUTER LIMITS.
