Actually, I (Illinois resident at the time) recall that Percy was, at that moment, the GOP challenger for long-time U.S. Senator Paul Douglas' seat. He did eventually supplant Douglas, and a sympathy vote is not out of the question. Psycho was to have played on CBS prime-time movie early that season, but never did. It finally made it to the airwaves on late-night local stations (at least in Chicago).

My ancient mouldering records (I used to keep obsessive track of such things) show my first viewing as March 6, 1968. I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. I know it was a network, primetime showing, but I don't think it was a Friday.

Oct 12 06 9:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I recall reading somewhere that there exists extra footage of the scene of Marion with the police officer that was edited for the released movie. Can anybody confirm this and does anyone know if this could be added to restore it to full length?

Oct 13 06 11:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I still have the "TV Guide" "Close-Up," that half-page listing for a movie or TV show that gave more details than their usual listings and usually included a photo. However, PSYCHO never had a network broadcast. It went into syndication and was aired locally. Some network affiliates may have chosen to pre-empt regularly scheduled programming to air the film in prime time knowing that it would garner big ratings. When it hit the airwaves here in the Ft. Worth/Dallas area it played on a non-network UHF channel and was shown five times that week.

Again, I don't know if it was or wasn't a network showing, but I do know that I saw it in a primetime showing, and in '68, we had only 3 TV stations, so it had to be a network affiliate.

In her PSYCHO book, Janet Leigh mentions the CBS cancellation and says the movie never had a network showing. But she also writes that "after another successful re-issue" the movie was sold into syndication in 1970. This is clearly a mistake, at least of omission, since I did see PSYCHO on TV in 1968. So then I searched the NY Times archive and found an article from June 1, 1967. The Times tells us that NYC's WABC-TV would be showing PSYCHO on June 24, 1967--"the first time that the 1960 film about a homicidal psychopath will be telecast." The article also quotes someone at WABC that the shower scene would be "cut down (!) somewhat" and that the edited scene would show "possibly three stabs instead of the entire 12." Thank God New Yorkers were protected from 75% of the slicing.

Oct 14 06 9:22 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My memory is pretty darned good, and I remember that PSYCHO had its prime time premiere March 1, 1968 on CBS. That was a Friday. It was the very first time I'd ever seen the film, and I thought it had been slightly edited when Marion Crane slowly slides down the wall of the shower and reaches for the curtain. It seemed that a black bar at the bottom of the screen kept inching up to cover her chest...but I've also seen that very same thing, even in the vhs version. Haven't watched the DVD in a long time--is it there, too? I also recall the promos for the 1966 showing: the close up of Norman's eye watching through the hole, etc. I was very, very disappointed when that showing was cancelled! But the one and a half year wait was worth it. Rod

These two instances suggest that the prime time broadcasts of PSYCHO were localized affairs, albeit on network owned stations. That it would appear on an ABC owned station first, when it had earlier been acquired and scheduled by CBS, further suggests that CBS' original lease on the film was understood to be ended and the film was actually available to interested individual broadcast stations as early as 1967. As I said earlier, the prime time premiere in my area was on a UHF, non-network station. I don't remember the year but some other Monster Kids from FW/Dallas -- that's you, Arch, FXRH, Count Gamula, Pop Ghoul -- might.

Regardless, no projectionist could "accidentally" misframe the shot and reveal more of the actress than Hitchcock intended. If most movie theaters were adhering to a 1.85:1 aspect ratio then the hard matte would not have been seen by moviegoers. On television, however, with the full frame available, the hard matte would be visible to the TV audience. I'd have to check my widescreen PSYCHO DVD to see how much, if any, of the hard matte can be seen.

I was under the impression that editing was done more to cut out the violence (as was mentioned above) rather than nudity. ... Reed

And it took me several viewings of Psycho to realize that you can indeed see boobs in a blurry shot when Leigh's hand reaches around the corner. According to everything I've read about the movie, Hitchcock would not allow an actress of Leigh's stature to appear nude, so all the nude stuff was done by a body double. Rod

That is what I've always read and heard. This would be another possible reason, besides modesty, to hard matte Leigh's shots. Wouldn't want to give away the illusion.

Oct 18 06 3:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As far as I know, the first time PSYCHO ran in Dallas/Fort Worth was in the mid-late '70s on UHF Channel 21. It ran every night for five nights, as ryanbrennan said. The Program Director at the station was a friend of mine, Mark Lamberti, who was quite talented and a Monster Kid to boot. When he left 21, he became PD at another local UHF station, Channel 27, and one of the first things he ran was WHITE ZOMBIE. He also ran SILENT PARTNER one night, totally uncut. That was a shock. I don't believe that DFW had a broadcast from any affiliate before Lamberti showed it, but anything's possible. Time diminishes memory.
