Andy Robinson's psycho-sniper steals the show in this thriller, which is supposedly based on the Zodiac killings of the 60's, hence, Scorpio. I read somewhere that the note from Scorpio that Eastwood finds at the beginning of the film, is in fact one of the actual notes written in real life by the Zodiac killer, and used for the movie. Anyone else hear this?

We crack each other up by quoting him. For example: "Hubba Hubba, Pig Bastard!" "I'm going to let her DIE! I just wanted you to know that!" "You don't talk to anyone. I don't care if it's a Pekaneese pissing on a lamp post. The girl dies." "Keep driving you old hag!" And on and on.....

Dec 21 06 7:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Recently tracked down the individual discs of the series as the boxset is $60-70 in most places. Got the 5 films of the Dirty Harry Series for about $40. Funny thing is, the last four cost me the combined price of the first DVD in the series. Mostly great stuff, especially Dirty Harry and Magnum Force. Enforcer & Sudden Impact have their moments, but seem dated. I think The Dead Pool is a lot of fun, though....

I was so sick of seeing Sandra Loch (sp?) in his movies at that point, not to mention this was the third Eastwood film in which she was raped or molested in some way (The Gauntlet and The Outlaw Josie Wales). Enough already!

How improbable a scenario can you ask for? Absolutely dumb. And I don't get it. What was the point? You couldn't rub Eastwood and Locke out in a clandestine way, so what's your solution? You decide to do it in broad daylight, on a main street in a major city, utilizing the ENTIRE police force to commit murder?!? WHAT???!!!

Aug 11 07 8:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watch all 5 back to back (well over a few days) about 6 months ago. Dirty Harry holds up really well and is easily the best - the direction and also the use of locations is very impressive. Magnum Force is probably next, some way behind, but could have been filmed anywhere whereas the first is very specific to San Francisco and makes the city itself part of the film. Sudden Impact is very sadistic and the body count gets racked up to ludicrous Die Hard levels so that its basically a comic book film. The much lower body count in the original makes it carry much more impact.

I hadn't heard that, but Robinson saying that he was going to shoot out the tires of a school bus and pick off the kids one by one -- that's exactly what Zodiac said he was going to do.

Aug 14 07 9:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched Zodiac on dvd a couple of weeks ago, and they do have the lead detective on the case going to the movies to see Dirty Harry. I'd never made the correlation before. I guess it's true. Dirty Harry was the story of the Zodiac killer.

This question is from the winter! I LOVE The Gauntlet. It was one of the first R rated movies I saw in the theater. Totally cheesy in some ways, totally satisfying and really cool in most ways.

Of course, the scenes about finding the dead girl and the school bus hijacking are disturbing, but am I the only one who winces during the football field scene? Also disturbing is the scene in which Andy Robinson pays Albert Popwell to beat him up.

Sep 27 07 7:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't think Siegel wanted us to regard Harry as a hero, but rather as the right man for the job--but who sometimes goes too far. So yes, the stadium scene is disturbing--I think that's why the camera pulls way way (WAY WAY) back--it's retreating in horror at what it's seeing. It's odd that just because of that peace symbol belt buckle the killer wears a lot of people concluded that Siegel was right-wing politically--but he was an old lefty from way back. Eastwood regarded THE GAUNTLET as a comedy, a parody of the kind of movie he usually made (and the characters he usually played). I suspected that was the case from Frazetta's gloriously overstated poster. Then a week or so after the movie was released, to puzzled reviews, I heard Eastwood interviewed on the radio. Was it a comedy? the interviewer asked. Eastwood heatedly replied, "HELL YES IT'S A COMEDY! Didn't you see the poster?" I felt oh so gratified.
